2001 MAMEA Conference
October 5 – 7
Lewes, Delaware
This year’s MAMEA Conference will be held at the Children’s Beach House in Lewes, Delaware.
Come experience this new, two story facility, designed by architect Carl Kreinan, a former
summer camp employee. “The building features a stair tower that is reminiscent of the lookout
towers at Cape Henlopen and incorporates inside details that bring to mind a sand castle.”
Begin conferencing on Friday with a continental breakfast at the Beacon Motel, our head-
quarters, where you may register and talk with the MAMEA Board. Meet your field trip leader
and grab a bag lunch to take with you while you experience our bays, rivers, or historic
museums. Continue on Friday night with a tour of the Children’s Beach House at our Wine and
Cheese Social and Silent Auction, where you will meet new members and enjoy old friends.
If Saturday is your first day of conferencing, stop by the Beacon Motel for a continental
breakfast before registering at the Children’s Beach House. Twenty presenters from the MidAtlantic region will await you there. Get ready for some fun learning and a new concept or two.
At noon, take a bag lunch and a friend and find the perfect picnic spot on CBH’s property,
overlooking Delaware Bay; then come inside for our annual Business Meeting and Share-A-Thon.
Conclude your day at the Lamp Post Seafood Restaurant, where you will enjoy dining Sussex
County style and bidding at our live auction, where anything and everything must go!
Sunday promises to be very special … Choose a half-day fishing trip out of Lewes or ease into
the morning with brunch at The Buttery. Then get ready for the University of Delaware’s
Coast Day – an afternoon packed with the latest in marine research, lab tours, children’s
activities, cooking demonstrations, and seafood competitions.
The Beacon Motel, our conference headquarters, is located at 514 East Savannah Road in Lewes, Delaware.

P. S. Scholarship Award
The Paul Standish Scholarship is awarded annually to one member of the Mid-Atlantic Marine
Education Association interested in attending the regional conference but in need of financial
assistance. The scholarship fund reduces the cost of the conference by waiving the fee for a full
registration package. To apply, complete this form and submit it along with a letter of application
to the MAMEA Grants Committee Chair, Beth Jewell. The letter of application should support the
reason for requesting this scholarship and should explain how attending the conference will
benefit you and your students (or other audiences). Applicants must be active members of
MAMEA for at least one year.
This scholarship was initiated in 1998 in memory of Paul Standish, a dedicated educator from
Williamsburg, VA, who served as VA State Representative and MAMEA Treasurer for many years.
Paul valued participating in our regional conferences, a time he used to help as Treasurer, to
exchange ideas among his colleagues, and to enjoy the camaraderie of friends.

Wagamon Pond in Milton. This is a challenging field trip recommended for intermediate
and advanced kayakers. Weather permitting. Fee: $25.
