Entry requirements
• Social Work open to all graduates, but certain degree subjects may
help
• A minimum of 2.2 honours degree is often needed
• Course includes a mixture of academic learning and placements in
social work settings
• Applications for all courses made through UCAS between 1
September and 15 January each year
• Full list of courses can be found on General Social Care Council

•Experience
• You should gain as much experience as possible, either through paid
positions in community care centres or relevant voluntary work
• NTU Initi8 programme good place to start with
• Community Service Volunteers (CSV)
• Some universities stipulate that you need a minimum number of hours
• Need to demonstrate evidence of the following:
patience and ability to remain calm in a crisis
resilience
flexibility
initiative
strong observation and analytical skills
able to absorb legal/procedural information
able to negotiate/mediate/interpret on behalf of clients

Social Worker training
• Qualified Social Workers have to register with the General Social
Care Council (GSCC)
• Registered Social Workers (RSWs) have to keep their training and
learning up to date in order to re-register after an initial 3 year
period
• New post qualifying framework allows social workers to continue
training in a flexible way
• Three levels of awards
Post qualifying award in specialist social work
Post qualifying award in higher specialist social work
post qualifying award in advanced social work
Five specialisms link into these- mental health; adult social care;
practice education; leadership and management; and children
and young people, their families and careers
