Training Package cont/d

 units of competency ▬ most units of competency are deemed equivalent to those in the previous training packages ▬ mapping grid for individual units of competency is available on the AgriFood Skills Australia website: http://www.agrifoodskills.net.au/training packages/AHC/

Training Package & Syllabus

 syllabus approved October 2011 ▬ ▬ ▬ for implementation with Year 11, 2012 first HSC examination on revised syllabus will be in 2013 published at: www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/syllabus_hsc/prim ary-industries.html

Recent changes to Certificates II & III in Agriculture

 the packaging rules for Certificates II and III in Agriculture revised in October 2011 ▬ ▬ ▬ ▬ the elective groupings were modified to provide greater flexibility AHC10 version 2.1 now available on www.training.gov.au

these changes have been incorporated into the syllabus and support materials published

Response to consultation

Consultation feedback

Key issue raised in consultation Response

 number of mandatory/stream units of competency - have been reduced to enable more flexibility  capacity to achieve Certificate II in Agriculture in the 240 indicative hour course - indicative hours allocated to a number of elective units have been reduced on the basis of holistic delivery and assessment

Consultation feedback

Key issue raised in consultation

 uncertainty about pathways from Certificate II and Certificate III through the Framework

Response

- additional associated document on pathways from Certificate II to Certificate III is available

Revised Primary Industries Curriculum Framework

Key principle for VET in the HSC

 dual accreditation = TWO sets of rules  HSC unit credit determined by ▬ ▬ HSC course requirements  outlined in the syllabus the requirements for satisfactory course completion  outlined in the Assessment, Certification and Examination (ACE) manual  AQF VET qualification requirements specified in ▬ the qualification packaging rules  defined in the Training Package   VET Quality Framework (formerly referred to as the AQTF) RTO policies

New opportunities within the Framework

 broader range of qualification pathways ▬ including for school-based traineeships  pathways to full Certificate III qualifications

Certificate II pathways

             Agriculture Production Horticulture Horticulture Parks & Gardens Production Nursery Retail Nursery Sports Turf Management Conservation and Land Management Rural Operations Shearing Wool Handling Floriculture Landscaping

Certificate III pathways

     Agriculture Horse Breeding Horticulture Parks and Gardens (Statement of Attainment only) Rural Operations

HSC credit units

 HSC VET courses are described in terms of their HSC indicative hours rather than unit value ▬ ▬ ▬ 60 HSC indicative hours = 1 HSC credit unit 120 HSC indicative hours = 2 HSC credit units 240 HSC indicative hours = 4 HSC credit units  HSC VET courses can count as preliminary and/or HSC units

HSC indicative hours

 the Board of Studies allocates HSC indicative hours to each unit of competency to show how much credit the unit of competency will get in the HSC  HSC indicative hours have a different purpose to nominal hours or delivery hours so are not necessarily the same

HSC course requirements versus Training Package qualification requirements

 HSC course requirements include: ▬ ▬ ▬ ▬ units of competency that are mandatory for the HSC HSC elective units of competency to meet HSC indicative hour course requirements HSC outcomes and content work placement  Training Package qualification packaging rules include: ▬ ▬ units of competency that are core for the qualification a minimum number of elective units of competency

 rules and structure of HSC VET courses are not the same as qualification packaging rules  delivery of courses must meet the HSC course requirements and comply with the Training Package rules

HSC examination

Primary Industries HSC examination

 one common examination regardless of qualification pathway  examination eligibility ▬ must have completed the Primary Industries (240 indicative hours) course  enables students to have the mark from the examination contribute to their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) ▬ 2 units maximum contribution

 based on ▬ ▬ HSC Content employability skills for the Certificate II qualifications in the Framework  independent of competency-based assessment  has no impact on student eligibility for the AQF VET qualification

HSC course Mandatory units of competency

(AQF level 2 or 3)

Stream units of competency

(AQF level 2 or 3)

Elective units of competency HSC Content Mandatory focus areas

• Chemicals • Safety • Sustainability • Weather • Working in the industry

Stream focus areas

• Livestock health and welfare

or

• Plant pests, diseases and disorders

no HSC Content HSC Examination

one common exam

Section I

15 objective response questions

Section II

short-answer questions

Section III

one extended response question

Section IV

one structured extended response question • one question for each stream • students answer the question on the stream they studied

not examinable

HSC examination specifications

 contained in the Assessment and Reporting in Primary Industries Stage 6 document  2-hour written paper worth 80 marks (exam mark converted to a mark out of 100)  four sections ▬ ▬ ▬ ▬ Section I – 15 objective response questions Section II – short answer questions Section III – one extended response question Section IV – two structured extended response questions (student answers the question on the stream they have studied)

 the syllabus from the perspective of the particular qualification  filters out content not relevant to that qualification

Pathways from Certificate II to Certificate III

 for students doing Certificate II in 240-hour course and Certificate III in Specialisation Study  due to overlap of mandatory units of competency, the related level 3 units of competency have been allocated gap HSC indicative hours

Employability Skills in Primary Industries

 are embedded in the units of competency  an employability skill summary provided for each AQF qualification  previously known as ‘key competencies’

Assessment and Reporting in Primary Industries Stage 6

       assessment in Stage 6 reporting achievement in the HSC competency-based assessment Training Package requirements ▬ assessment guidelines ▬ using qualified assessors the HSC examination estimated examination mark Primary Industries HSC examination specifications

Holistic delivery

 ▬ ▬ Consultation response – indicative hours allocated to a number of elective units have been reduced on the basis of holistic delivery and assessment refer to sample course planning templates to show holistic delivery cluster  refer to Assessment and Reporting document in Primary Industries (page 4)

Planning

Planning your course

 Decide which course(s) you are offering  Decide in which qualification the students will be enrolled  Select the units of competency that will be delivered ▬ ▬ ▬ mandatory, stream and elective meeting HSC course requirements meeting Training Package qualification rules  Develop a scope and sequence ▬ ▬ holistic delivery include all course requirements including work placement

Considerations for selecting electives

 HSC course requirements  RTO scope for delivery  VET teacher qualifications  desired qualification outcome … qualification packaging rules (AHC10 Training Package) … Training Package requirements

Implications of mandatory & stream unit on qualification outcomes

Arrangements for SBTs

 available in Certificate II and Certificate III  HSC unit credit ▬ for formal training ▬  ICF courses on the job  Industry-based Learning Course  school-based traineeship training plans must include all the mandatory units of competency for the HSC

Industry-based Learning Course

 Board Endorsed course  enables access to additional HSC unit credit for the 'on-the-job' training component of a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship (SBA/T) ▬ minimum of 2 units and a maximum of 4 units ▬ unit credit can be counted as either Preliminary and/or HSC  available only to students who … ▬ ▬ have an approved SBA/T training contract AND are also entered for the appropriate HSC VET course(s) for the formal off-the-job training component of the SBA/T

 enables students to demonstrate the additional knowledge, understanding, skills, values and attitudes they develop from the on-the-job training component  students must present evidence of their learning … ▬ a log ▬ a journal  assessment on a regular basis managed by the school ▬ 6 – 10 times across 2-year period = 4 units of credit ▬ 3 – 5 times over 1 year = 2 units of credit
