GSM® Platform Retrofit Tool
The GSM Platform Retrofit Tool is an interactive PowerPoint slide show that outlines the retrofits
and upgrades available for the GSM Platform and Platform Tray Feeder. It is divided into Head,
Feeder, PTF, Camera/Vision, and Additional Retrofits sections. Each section has a table of
contents of the individual retrofits. Choosing a retrofit brings up a cover page with an overall
functional description. You can then click a button entitled “Is my machine a candidate?”, which
takes you to a subsequent page detailing part numbers, prerequisite hardware/software
requirements, as well as restrictions. Click the “start” button on this page to begin using this tool.
Simply click on images and text to navigate the tool. Do not page up/down, or use the space bar to
navigate. Press the “escape” key to exit the slide show at any time.

Boost performance by upgrading to the seven-spindle performance
of the FlexJet Head to improve placement speed of small to midrange components. Retrofit existing Flex or NCC8 Head machines
with FlexJet Heads. Place a full component range of 0402s to
50mm square without machine or line retooling. Spindle dedicated,
head-mounted cameras and vision on-the-fly for larger components
provide full inspection capability.

FlexJet 07 Plus Upgrade/Refurbish Program
Candidate machines: 4681A GSM1TM Platform and 4688A
GSM2 TM Platform equipped with a FlexJet 07 Head
The improvements realized with Universal’s latest FlexJet Heads are available
for existing FlexJet customers as a trade-in upgrade program. This upgrade
provides a number of enhancements, including improved optical touchdown
sensors, lighting upgrades, improved air-kiss manifold, steel z-stop brackets,
and a new theta axis T-bar assembly with removable pins.
These upgrades result in easier maintenance at reduced intervals, improved
placement reliability, simplified component programming and optimization,
improved lighting consistency and Z-stop reliability.
In addition to the upgraded components listed above, a full refurbish
inspection, rebuild, and requalification is performed by trained technicians on
every head. This includes a 36-point inspection, replacement of wearable and
critical parts, and a six-day testing and verification process.

FlexJet Lighting Upgrade
Candidate machines: 4681A GSM1TM Platform and 4688A
GSM2 TM Platform equipped with a FlexJet 07 Head
The Enhanced OTHC Component Inspection Lighting of the new
FlexJet 09 and FlexJet Plus Heads reduces the need for component
lighting level adjustments and improves the lighting consistency
across all seven spindles. This lighting improvement is also
available a a separate retrofit. These enhancements were
accomplished by adding 3 LEDs to front lighting, 2 LEDs to side
lighting, and adding diffusion to the front of all prisms. The bottom
surface was painted to resolve the sporadic problem of stray light
reflections. Requires version UPS 4.2 or later Software.

2500grams with the High Force Conversion Kit. If process requirements
dictate a more precise response to a programmed placement force, apply the
optional Pressure Enhancement Kit to your High Force Heads. This
enhancement allows the placement pressure to be calibrated, using
calibration software in conjunction with a load cell and readout assembly. A
digital height gauge is used to precisely adjust the height for each spindle. In
addition to standard surface mount components, the High Force Head places
odd form components. Eliminating hand placement of odd form devices such
as connectors streamlines your operation by reducing solder defects and
eliminating any unnecessary handling of the PCB, thus providing superior
consistency.

Dispense - PDP to AMV Head Retrofit
Candidate machines: 4681A GSM1TM Platform equipped with PDP
dispense head
Upgrade from the Positive Displacement Pump (PDP) dispensing
head to the Archimedes Metering Valve (AMV) head. This kit is
available for only a moderately higher price than the cost of
replacing the piston pumps on the PDP head. The AMV head
utilizes a software driven screw to control the volume output, thus
significantly decreasing down time related to dot diameter setup.
The AMV uses a motor with an encoder to drive the screw with a
closed loop servo control system resulting in highly reliable
dispensing output. The retrofit kit makes use of the existing PDP
head’s clutches, clutch housings, Z motor, bearings, and syringe
holders (depending on the age of the PDP head).

retrofit capability to existing GSM machines (L-block and later). The
new interface is compatible with existing feeders (12VDC, 24VAC).
It is also compatible with new 8mm, Dual Lane 8mm, and 12mm 3Point Locating 42V PrecisionPro Feeders. The PrecisionPro
Feeder Interface is standard on S Block machines.

Rotates components to the placement orientation prior to transfer
into the GSM to achieve full gang pick capability. Each of the
components picked by the PTF can be rotated 0, 90, 180, or 270
degrees based on the information held within the UPS Component
Database. Increases throughput by eliminating time required for a
GSM Placement Head to rotate components. Theta rotations are
completed before GSM even picks the component from the PTF
Transfer Belt.

With the release of UPS 4.5 (also standard in UPS+) comes Platform
Setup Validation (PSV) to support PTF Matrix Tray scanning. PSV is a
validation system that requires all replenished components to be
scanned and verified with expected product data. It enables componentlevel tracking through log files, presenting several benefits. Chief among
these is PSV's ability to validate components to their correct feeder
slots. This capability has now been expanded to include PTF pallet
stacks. Thus PSV prevents operator-related loading errors, eliminating
costly rework, improving product yield, and minimizing product costs.
PSV on PTF is also a standard feature in UPS+. When coupled with
GEM, Barcode Product Changeover, and Dimensions Manufacturing
Monitoring, Platform Setup Validation provides component and board
level traceability.

Provides on-axis illumination for crisp imaging of highly specular

This kit illuminates in four directions to provide better contrast
between the board and the fiducial. The 4-sided scheme expands
the capability to better illuminate gold fiducials on white ceramic,
fiducials on flexible circuits, tin fiducils, and tin pad sites. Green
LEDs were added to improve on solder-mask covered fiducial
recognition.

UPS+ (Universal Platform Software) Upgrade
Programmers and technicians will appreciate product import and export
capability with OS/2 –based UPS software. Products and databases are
saved in a single binary file format for simple copy, export and backup. UPS+
also supports feeder database exports. Pick and place order is
programmable within task blocks. Component ID name strings is expanded to
32 characters. Improved PTF programming is achieved via a one-step
screen. New SM diagnostics software facilitates faster machine service and
trouble shooting.
UPS+ hardware features include an Intel Pentium III 400 Mhz processor for
a significant speed upgrade from the previous 133 Mhz processor, and a CDRW Drive providing a high-volume portable storage solution that is more
reliable than a floppy disc.

Don’t let board size slow your production. With the big board
hardware kit and UPS+ software installed, the GSM platform can
handle boards up to a maximum of 20" wide and 25" long.
Some limitations apply.

Dimensions Manufacturing Monitoring (DMM)

A host software application designed to collect and store machine
management data from production floor equipment. DMM collects,
archives, displays, and derives data relevant to the needs of the
end user. The DMM application is a browser-based solution and is
viewed by utilizing Microsoft's Internet Explorer ® 5.0.
In addition to allowing viewable access to multiple users,
incorporating an Internet browser eliminates IT/MIS concerns of
support and licensing for client side applications. All access to data
tables and viewable displays are administered by the end user. This
is also true for implementation of server and database security.

Barcode Product Changeover (BCC)
Candidate machines: 4681A GSM1TM Platform and 4688A
GSM2 TM Platform
Allows for seamless product changeovers without requiring the user
to manually load product data or press the start button. The
changeover is accomplished based on a bar code string being
presented to bar code reading hardware mounted to one of the
board handling lane’s upline conveyors. Once the bar code string is
received, a lookup is performed in a cross-reference lookup table to
verify what product should be executed for the given bar code.

Calibration with CPE and MMI Kits

Standard Machine Calibration verifies Pattern Error Correction and inspection camera
locations, and determines spindle behavior at various rotations in an automated calibration
process. One Calibration and CPE Kit is recommended per customer site.
CPE facilitates fine-tuning of GSM platform performance after successful completion of
calibration. In addition, CPE allows cameras and placement heads to be removed and reinstalled without performing a full calibration routine. Instead, the 30 minute CPE routine
(per head/camera combination) will correct for mean shifts to ensure optimal placement
performance.
The new MMI (Machine Measuring Itself) function in UPS 4.2 facilities automated
assessment of machine accuracy and repeatability performance in terms of Cpk values by
using the GSM positioning and vision systems to inspect calibrated slug placements and
compare with known plate fiducial locations. MMI is a faster, less expensive, and more
reliable alternative to the manual Capability Assessment Kit. One Calibration and CPE Kit
is recommended per customer site
