INTRODUCTION
 Classification and ranking of scientific journals are considerable
concerns for authors, publishers, and journal editorial board
members.
 For authors, their intention in publishing their scientific and research
findings in famous and high ranking journals drives their interest to
know journals ranking to make the right choice.
 For publishers and editors, their concern of attracting authors to
publish their scientific work in their journals and improve the
journal’s ranking require significant knowledge in journals
classification
and standards of ranking.
3
INTRODUCTION
 Journal rankings are intended to reflect the place of a journal
within its field, the relative difficulty of being published in that
journal, and the prestige associated with it.
 Several famous scientific institutes are considerably recognized
worldwide as journal ranking establishers and categorizers.
4
INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC INSTITUTE
(THOMSON ISI)



The institute was founded by the American well-known scientist Eugene Garfield in
1960 and acquired by Thomson Reuters (Thomson ISI) in 1992.
Garfield known to be the founder of the science citation index (SCI), a citation index of
which journals are ranked systematically according to number of citing by authors termed
as impact factor (IF).
A yearly journal citation report (JCR) is therefore established and published by Thomson
ISI stating journals ranking according to their impact factor.


Another categorizing journal ranking related to Thomson ISI of which journals are
categorized into four categories: Q1, Q2, Q3, & Q4.
Journals dominating major research fields are categorized as Q1 and Q2 journals while the
more general scoping journals are classified as Q3 and Q4 journals.
Practically, Q1 and Q2 journals are known to be having higher impact factor than Q3 and
Q4 ranked journals.
Thomson ISI database can be found in the ISI web of knowledge website.

THE ESSEC RESEARCH CENTER RANKING
OF JOURNALS
 ESSEC is one of the top French business
schools.
 Its journal ranking list was established in 1999.
 The ranking of a journal was decided by a
committee of seven ESSEC professors with
outstanding performance in research.
 Factors considered are the aim and scope of the
journal, the quality of its board, the SCCI impact
factor, external opinions about the journal,
quality of the papers, readership, scale of
distribution in libraries, journal lifetime,
refereeing process, etc.

SCImago JOURNAL & COUNTRY RANK





The SCImago journal and country Rank is a portal that includes the journals and country
scientific indicators developed from the information contained in the Scopus® database
(Elsevier B.V.).
These indicators can be used to assess and analyze scientific domains.
This platform takes its name from the SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) indicator, developed by
SCImago from the widely known algorithm Google PageRank™.
This indicator shows the visibility of the journals contained in the Scopus database from
1996. SCImago is a research group from the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones
Científicas (CSIC), University of Granada, Extremadura, Carlos III (Madrid) and Alcalá de
Henares, dedicated to information analysis, representation and retrieval by means of
visualisation techniques.
As well as SJR Portal, SCImago has developed The Atlas of Science project, which
proposes the creation of an information system whose major aim is to achieve a graphic
representation of IberoAmerican Science Research. Such representation is conceived as a
collection of interactive maps, allowing navigation functions throughout the semantic
spaces formed
8 by the maps.
THE JOURNAL QUALITY LIST (JQL)
 The Journal Quality List is a collation of journal rankings from a
variety of sources, established in 1999 by Professor Anne-Wil Harzing
in the field of international management and marketing.
 It is published primarily to assist academics to target papers at journals
of an appropriate standard.
 The list was originally collated while Professor Anne was associated
with the Bradford University School of Management (1997-2001).
 Since then, the list has been updated and extended periodically to keep
it current.
 The current version of the JQL contains 23 different rankings of 940
journals.
9
THE ERIM JOURNAL LIST
 The strategic purpose of the Erasmus
Research Institute of Management (ERIM)
Journals List is to contribute to the quality
of the scientific output of ERIM and to the
academic reputation of the institute.
 The ERIM Journals List (EJL) helps to
define the core domain of ERIM and
provides direction as to the type of
publications that ERIM would like to
produce.

ASSOCIATION OF BUSINESS SCHOOLSACADEMIC JOURNAL QUALITY GUIDE
The ABS Academic Journal Quality Guide is a hybrid
based partly on peer review, partly on statistical
information relating to citation, and partly upon
editorial judgments following on from the detailed
evaluation of many hundreds of publications over a
long period.

CEFAGE-UE JOURNAL RANKING IN
ECONOMICS & MANAGEMENT




The Center for Advanced Studies in Management and Economics of the University of
Évora (CEFAGE-UE) was created in 2006, with the aim of promoting research in the
areas of Management and Economics.
Since 2009, CEFAGE-UE is funded by Fundação para a Ciência e Teconologia (FCT)
and achieved the maximum grade ("Excellent") in its latest research units evaluation.
The research interests of CEFAGE-UE's members cover, among other fields,
agricultural economics, econometrics, environmental resources, finance, industrial
organization, innovation and entrepreneurship, international economics, labour
economics, operations research, tourism economics, spatial economics and sustainable
growth.
Therefore, CEFAGE-UE is divided into four research groups: "Industrial Economics
and Business Strategy", "Econometrics, Statistics and Operations Research", "Finance
and Accounting" and "Labour, International and Spatial Economics".

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR AUTHORS






Look for proper specialized journal in the field
with good reputation and ranking accounted by a
known institution.
Make sure that your paper is within the journal
scope and interest (refer to the guides for
authors as well).
Do not go for paid journals, they almost publish
anything regardless the research quality.
It takes long time to publish in a good journal
(not less than six months), as your paper has to
pass through journal editor and reviewers.
ISI journals with high Impact Factor are of the
best journals internationally.
Elsevier (Sciencedirect & Scopus database),
Springer, & John Wiley are of the well-known
publishers.13
Conclusion
 Scientific journals classification and ranking are of
the major interests for authors and publishers
worldwide.
 Various scientific institutes worldwide have the
capacity to classify scientific journals significantly
using certain criteria related to journal major field
and citation.
 Technically, number of citations for journal
publications is an influencing factor that determine
journal ranking.
