POLICY/SYSTEMS: • Ann Marie Reinke, Asst. Director of Academic Affairs introduced and promoted a reading curriculum in grades k-4. All books were related to health and encouraged for use in language arts, independent and group reading times. The goal is to enhance this curriculum each year by adding field trips and/or special guest visitors along with creating learning outcomes ©Copyright 2007 Sycamore Community Schools, All Rights Reserved. How did we get to bronze as a district? FOODSERVICE/COMPETITIVE FOODS: • All grains are whole grain rich (50% WG) • All a la carte, meets 35/10/30 requirements related to sugar, sat. fat and total fat • Increased access to fresh fruit & veggies • Leaner proteins offered more often • No fried foods used in school meal program ©Copyright 2007 Sycamore Community Schools, All Rights Reserved. How did we get to bronze at the High School? • Increased availability of fresh fruit and vegetables daily for students • Extended breakfast through 3rd period to allow all students to have access to breakfast • Improved selection of healthy entrée offerings to students • Uses sporting events for fundraisers such as Kicking it for MS (Soccer), Volley for the Cure (Volleyball), Aves for Autism (Basketball) and Relay for Life (Running) ©Copyright 2007 Sycamore Community Schools, All Rights Reserved. How did we get to bronze at the Junior High? • Annually using a 5k run as the major fundraiser promotes a healthy environment for students and families • Monthly tastings with principal advisory committee to garners student input on healthy menu offerings ©Copyright 2007 Sycamore Community Schools, All Rights Reserved. How did we get to bronze at Edwin H. Greene? • Offering a 2nd Chance breakfast opportunity for students to get a jumpstart to their day before learning “core curriculum”. Even scored a Who Dey visit! • Hosted the Can you Hack-ett Challenge where students had to complete 60 min. of activity for 4 weeks. ©Copyright 2007 Sycamore Community Schools, All Rights Reserved. How did we get to bronze at Blue Ash? • Annually hosts a dance-a-thon, as a school fundraiser, but with an added benefit of promoting physical activity in a fun way! • Blue Ash Elementary administration encourages daily snacks to be healthy and discourages sweet treats for birthday celebrations and rather to instead for parents to donate a game for students to enjoy with their class. ©Copyright 2007 Sycamore Community Schools, All Rights Reserved. How did we get to bronze at Maple Dale? • Re-established “Milers” a lunch time walking program for staff and students • Introduced a Girls on the Run at Maple Dale for 3rd and 4th grade girls to run a 5k while also promoting a way to build selfesteem for the girls ©Copyright 2007 Sycamore Community Schools, All Rights Reserved. How did we get to bronze at Montgomery Elementary? • Monthly fruit or vegetable tastings and Kindergarten education around those foods. • Booster-thon Fun Run – A way for the whole school to get fit and be more active together • During the staff pedometer challenge a free metabolism testing was conducted for interested employees Food Tasting ©Copyright 2007 Sycamore Community Schools, All Rights Reserved. How did we get to bronze at Symmes? • Started a staff pedometer challenge (spread to an entire district staff challenge including the board office) • Implemented recess before lunch (1st elem. to take the leap!), and Symmes Steppers, an outdoor walking program for students and staff • Developed Wellness Warrior program for students to try various fitness opportunities at school • Promoted healthy snacks in the classroom ©Copyright 2007 Sycamore Community Schools, All Rights Reserved. National Recognition for Achievement Sycamore was the only school to be recognized for the entire district! Sycamore is the only district in the nation to have all parents in school leader positions.
