The World Badminton Tournament Structure has Four Levels: Team Events Individual Events Thomas and Uber Cup Thomas Cup • Men’s team event • First staged in 1948-49 • Held every 2 years • Most titles – Indonesia (13) • Next championship – New Delhi 2014 Uber Cup • Women’s team event • First staged in 1956-57 • Held every 2 years • Most titles – China (12) • Next championship – New Delhi 2014 Grand Prix Events World Badminton Team Championships • Founded in 1989 – held in Jakarta, Indonesia • Held every 2 years • Attracts more than 50 national teams • No prize money for the event • Valuable BWF ranking points earned • Most titles – China (9) •Next championship – Dongguan, China 2015 • Introduced in 2007 • 12 tournaments held globally • 5 tournaments are elevated to prestigious Premier status (more prize money and ranking points) • Successful players invited to Super Series Master Finals at end of the year • Two Levels – Grand Prix Gold and Grand Prix • Level 3 events • Highest level Grand Prix ggold • Grand Prix Gold – Prize pool minimum $120,000 • Grand Prix – Prize pool minimum $50,000 • All events offer ranking points Superseries Premier The Superseries Premier events offer higher ranking points and prize money. Only 5 of the 12 tournaments are elevated to Premier status. The winners receive 11000 ranking points, the runners up receive 9350 ranking points. Only top eight players or pairs in the Super Series rankings after the final Super Series tournament, as announced by Badminton World Federation will be eligible to participate, It is limited to two entries per member association. In the tournament, eight players or pairs will be divide into two pools of four, with the top two players or pairs will advancing into semi-finals. 10 – 14 December 2014 Prize money: USD 500,000 BWF Superseries The BWF Superseries is a 12-tournament series, 5 tournaments are elevated to Premier status. The winners receive 9200 ranking points, the runners up receive 7800 ranking points. Korea Open – 7-12 January 2014, Seoul, prize money: $250,000 Yonex-Sunrise India Open - 1-6 April 2014, New Delhi, prize money: $250,000 Singapore Open - 8-13 April 2014, Singapore City, prize money: $300,000 Yonex Open Japan – 10-15 June 2014,Tokyo, prize money: $250,000 Australian Open – 24-29 June 2014,Sydney, prize money: $750,000 French Open – 21-26 October 2014, Paris, prize money: $250,000 Hong Kong Open -18-23 November 2014, Kowloon, prize money: $250,000 Grand Prix Gold The World Grand Prix Series is split into two categories: The Grand Prix Gold and the Grand Prix. The Grand Prix Gold winners receive 7000 ranking points, the runners up receive 5950.
