At Stake…
From a 2010 Texas Transportation Institute Study:
Using Federal Fiscal Year 2009 passenger data, researchers estimated:
1) 39,000 vehicle-trips would be added to parallel roadways if the
Heartland Flyer did not exist.
2) Passengers spent $18 million for lodging, meals, shopping, and
entertainment
3) This $18 million resulted in nearly $1.4 million in sales tax revenue to
communities served by the Heartland Flyer.
Other Discussion Points…
1) Denton County population continues to grow at a rapid rate, increasing
the need for multi-modal transportation.
2) TxDOT received FRA HSIPR grant approval in January for $4 million in
track improvements on the Fort Worth – Oklahoma state line BNSF
Railway route. This route hosts the Heartland Flyer.
3) Speed will increase over the Texas segment from 60MPH to 79MPH
once improvements are complete.
4) Forecasts indicate a 10% sales tax increase in the first year of a Krum
stop operation.
5) The station stop would provide an economic boost for downtown Krum
merchants translating into economic growth.
