General Information

The American University in Bulgaria was founded in 1991 in
Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria, through the joint efforts of USAID, the
Open Society Institute, the Bulgarian local and national
government, the University of Maine, and the City of
Blagoevgrad.

AUBG is a private American-style Liberal Arts University,
comparable to institutions in the US, where the liberal
arts education:
- encourages students to develop critical thinking
and creative problem solving;
- nurtures both the skills needed for successful careers and
an ongoing intellectual curiosity.

The language of instruction is English.


Accreditation, Mission & Vision

Accreditation - AUBG is accredited both in the United States
(by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges)
and in Bulgaria (by the National Evaluation and Accreditation
Agency).

Mission Statement - the mission of the American University
in Bulgaria is to educate students of outstanding potential in a

to prepare them for democratic and ethical leadership in



After Graduation
With its more than 3,800 alumni from 20 classes, AUBG’s
greatest impact on the region is through its highly
successful graduates.

30 - 35% of AUBG graduates continue their studies at
prestigious universities: Wharton, Cornell, Harvard,
Stanford, Yale, London School of Economics, the
Sorbonne, Central European University and many other
universities worldwide.

The other 65 - 70 % of AUBG graduates begin their
professional career almost immediately in leading world
companies: The World Bank, Ernst &Young, IBM Bulgaria,
Procter & Gamble, Siemens AG, General Electric, Shell,

Financial Aid - AUBG provides institutional financial aid which is based on both
academic merit and financial need of the student.
Scholarships - AUBG offers many students scholarship support made possible

full or partial and are allocated according to conditions specified by the donor.
