The term tragic hero, first used by the Greek
philosopher Aristotle, refers to a central character
in a drama who is dignified or noble.
According to Aristotle, a tragic hero possesses a
defect, or tragic flaw, that brings about or
contributes to his downfall.
 This flaw may be poor judgment, pride (hubris),
weakness, or an excess of an admirable quality.

The tragic hero, noted Aristotle, recognizes his or
her own flaw and its consequences, but only after it
is too late to change the course of events.
