Properties
1.Moisture Transfer
PP is the least absorbent of the textile fibers.
It does not wet out. In fact, PP “adsorb” water,
moving moisture in the vapor stage to the outside of
the fabric, never holding any moisture. An added
benefit is the breathablility of PP. The moisture moves
away from the skin in the vapor stage, before it has
condensed on the skin. Condensation on the skin
gives rise to a feeling of clamminess.
2.Quick Dry
Because PP does not absorb moisture into the
fiber, drying time is minimal. The fabric will dry while
you wear it.
4
3.Lightweight
PP is the lightest of all apparel fibers and is lighter
than water. It is 30% lighter than polyester, and 20%
lighter than nylon. Regardless of the activity, weight
saved means energy is saved for improved
performance. You get more bulk and warmth for less
weight.
4.Thermal Conductivity
PP possesses the lowest thermal conductivity of any
natural or synthetic fiber. This means that more heat is
retained for a longer length of time. The wearer stays
warmer longer. The insulation factor is greater by
weight for PP than other fiber.
5
5.Chemical Resistant
 PP will not react to ordinary chemicals or degrade due to sweat and
body salts.
 Therefore, if washed with bleach or harsh detergents, polyolefin will
not break down.
6.No Odor Retention



PP is non-absorbent. It is hydrophobic, so bacteria and mold can not
survive on the non-moisture surface of the DreamFel® fabric.
A garment that is washed regularly in hot or warm water with
detergent will not retain body odors.
Note that the PP is lipophilic; therefore, when you wear PP clothes for
several days without washing your body, the body oil will generate
smell of the grease which will stick on PP surface, but it can be
washed.
6
7.Colorfastness
PP is precolored in the liquid stage so the color in
the fiber is part of the fiber itself.
Why is this significant?
PP will hold color longer than other fibers. During
outdoor activities, washing or wear and tear your
garment stays looking newer longer. Who said outdoor
enthusiasts don’t want to look good?
8.Abrasion Resistant
PP is a durable fiber, and will withstand a lot of wear
and tear. This will help preserve those pressure points
where clothing tends to wear, like in the seat.
7
9.Environmentally
Polymerization process:saving energy
PP belong to polyaddition, it can release heat.
Spinning process:low energy exhaust
The spinning temperature of PP is lower than
polyester and nylon. The waste yarn can be
respinning. There is no waste yarn in spinning
process.
Dying and finishing process:
Because PP can’t be dyed, water is no wasted.
Throwing away problem :
1.100% PP can be recycled easily.
2.The harmlessness of this material is approved by FDA &
Oeko-Tex Standard 100 class 1 for baby articles.
3.It does not produce any toxic gas or harmful by-products.
4.After throwing away, PP will degrade by sunlight in half year.

Functional DreamFel®
1.Photo-catalytic:DreamFel® - PCAM
 The effect of Photo-catalytic DreamFel® :
1.Anti-bacterial.
2.Anti-odor and breaks down organic gases.
3.Generates negative ions(phyton-cide-filled).
 Double deodorizing mechanism of photo-catalytic
reaction and chemical absorbing reaction.
 As long as there is light, photo-deodorant
DreamFel® keeps working!
 Because of compounding in melt-spinning, the effect
is high durability to withstand long usage.
 Even weak light from fluorescent lamps is enough for
the photo-catalytic reaction to decompose odor
molecules.
17
Photo-catalytic Reaction

The irradiated light energy makes water and oxygen molecules
nearby the surface of the photo-catalyst to become activated
pieces, and those pieces oxidize the organic odor molecules
absorbed in the ceramics. Finally odor molecule is decomposed
to CO2 and water and the smell is gone.

Applications
1.Thermalwear(underwear)、Skiwear
 Heat Retention:PP has the lowest thermal conductivity rating
of all natural and synthetic fibers. Thermal conductivity is the
rate at which a substance loses heat. Because of PP's low
rating, more heat is retained than any other natural or
synthetic fiber. PP is even warmer than wool.
 PP is specified by the U. S. Military for Extended Cold
Weather Clothing System (ECWCS). ECWCS is a five layer
clothing system for military use in extreme environments
such as Alaska and Bosnia. A PP brushed fleece garment is
the first thermal layer, the skin contact layer, of the ECWCS
system.
 PP is soft to the touch and comfortable to wear.
 PP Tg point is between -15 to -20 ℃. In a polar environment,
compare to the other fibers, it will not become hard and
34
brittle.

Explain :
When the temperature is below the polymer Tg, it will become
the glass state that will be easily broken, so the lower the Tg
region more suitable for low temperature.
From the above chart, we see that PP fabric is suitable for lowtemperature region.

2.Dive and Surf
 In many cases an PP wetsuit can delay the need for a neoprene
wetsuit until later in the season. PP retains body heat and is less
cumbersome and more comfortable than neoprene. The
spandex in conjunction with the PP gives complete freedom of
movement.
 For warm weather diving, the suit insulates the body as water
temperatures vary by depth and time of day.
 For cold weather diving when added protection is needed, an PP
wetsuit serves as a neoprene liner which a) eases the diver in
and out of the cunbersome neoprene bodysuit, and b) adds
another layer of insulation to retain body heat. PP is diving gear
which is used year round.
 PP does not absorb water, therefore the divingsuit will dry
rapidly out of the water.
 For surfing, PP is used again as a seasonal replacement for
neoprene in both surf and rashguards. Again, it is an insulating
fiber to keep the surfer comfortable as he/she goes in and out
of the water.
 Protection from the sun, jelly fish and sharp coral.

3.Swimwear
 PP does not absorb water, therefore the swimsuit will dry
in minutes.
 Chlorine Resistant: Eliminates the need for expensive
chlorine-resistant spandex.
 Complete freedom of movement. PP with spandex has
complete 4-way stretch up to 125% in each direction.
Most swimsuit fabric has 2-way stretch.
 PP is a warmer fiber than nylon. Takes the chill off early
morning practices or ocean swims.

4.Activewear and Multi-sport
 PP is a warmer fiber than nylon. Takes the chill off early
morning or winter work-outs.
 Evaporative cooling. The insulative properties of PP
enable the wearer to cool down slowly after exercising
without getting chilled.
 PP is an excellent fabric for cross training and multi-sport.
It keeps the wearer warm, dry, and comfortable,
important characteristics for skin contact fabrics used in
multi-sports.
 Complete freedom of movement: PP with spandex has

Technology of PP Moisture Management
 Dry layer:
1.Against your skin, sweat or moisture transfers to the wicking layer.
2.It can be the hydrophobic fiber (ex.PP) or special cross section fiber(ex.CoolMax).
 Wicking layer:
1.It wicks the sweat or moisture from the dry layer to outside of fabric.
2.It can be the hydrophilic fiber (ex.cotton, rayon) or high count filament.
46
Dry Test

4
1.Water dropped on the white skin-side of the fabric quickly slides vertically
through the PP and spreads horizontally across the darker wicking layer.
2.The fabric s pressed forcefully between two layers of absorbent brown
paper towel to demonstrate how the moisture moves to the face of the
garment, away from the skin.
3.The white PP side leaves no moisture on the paper towel. The water exits
through the spaces in the PP layer and is not absorbed into the yarn.
4.Notice the difference in the dryness on the paper towel. The PP side of
the fabric absorbs all of the moisture.
→Which side would you rather have against your skin?

47
Characteristic of PP Moisture Management
 DreamFel ® is not coating by wicking agent, it is
permanent and lasts up to 100 washes.
 PP compared with CoolMax:
CoolMax is a polyester yarn made with external
channels that move moisture. CoolMax wicks moisture
and repels moisture. Once the fabric reaches its
saturation point, the spaces between the yarns close
and moisture transference and evaporation slows down.
PP fabrics go beyond wicking because the PP dry layer
is built right in, next to the skin and does not absorb
moisture. In effect, the dry layer acts like a “second
layer of skin”, allowing moisture and vapor to exit
through the spaces in the fabric without saturation –
you stay drier longer and dry faster.
 DreamFel ® can keep you both cooler48
and warmer.
Compare with Cotton
 Cellulosic fiber:
Cellulosic fibers like cotton and rayon
feel great against the skin when dry.
Cotton-rich fabrics have to many OHs,
therefore they absorb and hold to
much moisture. As a result, there is a
breakdown in the moisture transport;
the fabric becomes saturated and the
microclimate between skin and fabric
becomes hot and sweaty.
 Moisture management fabric:
The moisture management technology
moves moisture quickly from the skin
through the fabric and into the air.
49
Design of PP Thermalwear
 Helly Hansen 3-Layer Weather System:
1.Inner Layer:LIFA Bodywear
LIFA bodywear, made 100% Polypropylene, serves a dual purpose
of moisture management and insulation. Using the body’s own heat,
LIFA acts as a transport agent to perspiration, moving moisture to
the next layer of clothing and away from your skin so that you
always feel dry and comfortable.
2.Insulating Layer: Helly Hansen PROPILE/PILE
The knitted fabric absorbs minimal moisture and has the unique
capability of collecting and keeping the warmth while transporting
moisture away from the body.
3.Protective Outer Layer:HELLY-TECH
Windproof, waterproof and breathable fabrics give protection
against changing weather.

50
Notice
 Iron free, because of low melting point.
 The temperature of dry heat set can’t over 120℃,
but PP and PET blend fabrics can dye in 130 ℃ hot
water.
 Don’t use mineral oil base lubricant, because
mineral oil will damage PP.
 Don’t dry clean.
 Different end use utilizes different softening agent:
a.If the function of fabric is moisture management,
then adding the hydrophilic softening agent.
b.If the function of fabric is water repellent, then
adding the hydrophobic softening agent.
51
 Poor adhesion to glues and latex, because of
none functional group.
 Flammable which melts and burns like wax.
If necessary, it must be adding the flame retardant.
 Poor UV and thermal stability requires addition of
UV stabilizers and antioxidants – when the PP
fabrics is used as outdoor, just like car seat, beach
umbrella, beach chair.
