Animal Cell Slide
1. Place a drop of methylene blue on your slide
2. Rub the inside of your cheek with a cotton swab then rub
it on your slide
3. Place your swab in disinfectant.
DO NOT put in on the table
4. Carefully lower a cover slip over the sample, use a pencil
to help you
5. Make sure you have no air bubbles
Scientific Drawing
Make a scientific drawing of an animal cell.
Rules of scientific drawings:
 Use only straight lines
 Do not colour or shade in
 Label each part with a straight line. No arrow head

Plant Cell Slide
1. Peal off a thin layer of onion tissue and place on a slide
2. Carefully spread the piece of tissue out so that there are
no folds
3. Place a couple of drops of iodine on the onion tissue
4. Carefully lower a cover slip over the sample, use a pencil
to help you
5. Make sure you have no air bubbles

Function
The control centre of a cell.
Cell Membrane
This controls what substances can enter and leave
the cell.
Cytoplasm
The jelly like filling of a cell. This is where chemical
reactions take place in a cell.
Cell Wall
The rigid firm coating found around a plant cell. It
helps to keep the cell shape.
Chloroplasts
Contain a green chemical called chlorophyll which
absorbs sunlight. Allow plants to make their own food.
Vacuole
Can store sugar and water. Helps to control the water
content of plant cells

Challenge
Your challenge is, in pairs, to create a 3D model of a cell
using the materials provided.

Once all models are complete you will each take turns going
round looking at each others and giving feedback.
