Survey
Preview or pre-read the chapter before
actually studying it. Get a sense of the
layout of the chapter (or book, for that
matter).
How is it structured? Take notice of the
sections, paragraphs, subparagraphs, etc.
How many pages do you have to cover?
Familiarize yourself with the material.
Question
Write out each heading or subheading
as a question. If there are no
headings, write questions as you read.
These questions will help you identify
main points in the reading and focus
your attention on important points.
Read
Read the material with an eye for answering
the questions you have already written. Pay
close attention to the beginning and ending
of each paragraph. Those sentences often
contain the main ideas.
While reading, highlight main ideas,
important concepts, and terminology
without marking up the entire book. Be
choosy.
Recite
Read the answers to your questions
either out loud, silently, or to another
person.
You may also want to summarize what
you have written in brief notes.
Review
Review soon after finishing a chapter
to start getting the information in
memory.
REVIEW DAILY. The more daily review,
the less time spent cramming before
a test.
