SCAVENGE FIRES
Scavenge Fires
Explain how the fire is detected
Stating what action is necessary to
control & extinguished
State how the fires can be avoided
by correct engine operation and
maintenance
Indicate what engine components
require testing / inspection before
the engine is restarted or run at full
power
Detection
Smoke & smell in engine room
Rise in exhaust temperature
Fall in engine speed
Heavy smoke from scavenge drains
Surging of turbo chargers
Glow in scavenge space windows
Fire link alarm
Crankcase mist detector alarm
Action to carry out
Slow down engine to 40 –50 rpm
Cut-off fuel from defective cylinder/s
Close scavenge space drains
Increase cylinder lubrication to
defective main piston/s
Inform bridge & remaining engineers
Action to carry out (cont/..)
Apply steam smothering, CO2 and
water to defective units
Stop engine, engage turning gear &
apply CO2 smothering if injection
points are fitted to the scavenge
space
Apply cooling water hose to engine
structure around scavenge space
Rig fire fighting equipment
Action to carry out (cont/..)
Never open up scavenge space until it
can be confirmed that the fire has either
been extinguished or has burnt out
Monitor c/case mist detector.
Monitor waste heat system for signs of
fire.
Engine slow down ( not usually stopped)
to reduce air velocity & therefore reduce
the intensity of the fire. This will
hopefully control the fire preventing it
from spreading to adjacent units
Action to carry out (cont/..)
Fuel cut-off as the scavenge fire
smoke causes incomplete
combustion & therefore fuels the fire.
This will prevent the fire spreading to
bilge and E/Room.
This will resist piston seizure
How to avoid
Keep scavenge spaces and ports
clean
Continuously or regularly drain all
water / oil sludge
Maintain cylinder lubricators in good
conditions & correctly timed &
metered.
