When most people think of having
three wishes, they think of the good that may
happen. But people do not usually think of all of
the poor outcomes that could happen if they are
not careful. In both “Monkey’s Paw” by W. W.
Jacobs and “Aladdin” by Disney, two similar
stories, the characters are given three wishes.
Some of the wishes in both stories are chosen
wisely, yet some of the wishes were chosen
poorly. “Aladdin” is set in Arabia with kings and
princesses, where a young, poor man and his
monkey find a magical lamp; this lamp holds a
genie inside. On the other hand, “Monkey’s
Paw” is set in England where a couple and their
son receive a talisman, a monkey’s paw, which
will grant them three wishes. In the end, the
outcomes of the wishes in both stories are very
different. In one sorrow, and in the other joy.
However multiple lessons are learned in both
stories.

to serve anyone
•
Mr. White wishes for the mutilated

Mrs. White looks for Herbert
Both of the third wishes are wise; they are
doing what’s best for someone else. Both
stories wish for someone gone.

Compare/ Contrast Motivations
• First wish
Both characters wanted something. While Aladdin wanted to meet the
princess, Mr. White wanted money.
• Second wish
For the second wish, in both of the stories, the characters were trying to
save a life. Mrs. White wants her son to have his life back, and Aladdin wants
his life.
• Third wish
Aladdin wished for genie to be free. Similar to that, Mr. White wishes for
Herbert to be gone, or free from Mr. and Mrs. White. In both stories, they are
doing what is best.
Compare/Contrast Outcomes
• First wish
Aladdin’s first outcome went rather smoothly; Aladdin got into the kingdom.
On the other hand, Mr. White’s first wish makes him regret.
• Second wish
Monkey’s Paw second outcomes leaves Mrs. White happy, but Mr. White
worried. Aladdin’s second outcome leaves him alive.
• Third wish
Both wishes leave some people happy, but others upset
Compare/Contrast
In both stories, the characters can have 3 wishes. In both
stories, the wishes don’t always bring good. The wishes in both stories
bring some happiness and cause some sadness or disappointment.
However, the ending in Aladdin was happy. Aladdin married Jasmine,
Jafar was gone, and genie was free. On the other hand, at the end of
the monkey’s Paw, Mr. and Mrs. White both die of depression and
loneliness.
