Question No. 7 : RELIGION
Write Name of the Religion in full and give
the code from the following list
Hindu –

Sikh
– 4
Muslim – 2
Buddhist - 5
Christian – 3
Jain 6
for other religion, write
name of the religion in full
but do not give any code
number. Box at the left of
this column to be left
blank.
Question No. 7
You have to record the religion of each member of the
household as returned by the respondent in reply to this
question. Enquiry should be made for each member of the
household independently.
You should not presume that the religion of the head or the
respondent is necessarily the religion of every member being
enumerated in the household.
If a person says that she/he
has no religion, record
‘no religion’

In any area due to any organised
movement, if the religion is not being
truthfully returned, you should record them
as actually returned by the respondent.
Matter to be reported to the Supervisor by
the enumerator for verification.
Question No. 8 : Scheduled Caste (SC) / Scheduled Tribe (ST)
8(a) : Is this person SC/ST? If ‘YES’ give code in box:
SC-1, ST-2. If ‘NO’ put ‘3’ in box.
Important to remember :-
(1) Each State / UT has its own list of SCs / STs
(2) List of Scheduled Castes & Scheduled Tribes
is to be furnished by the DCO to all Charges.

(3) While canvassing, it has to be ascertained
whether respondent is SC / ST or Not and
appropriate code to be entered in the
column 8(a),

(4) In addition to the code, the name of the SC /
ST to be written in 8 (b)
Question No. 8 :
(5) To ensure that the name of the SC/ST
returned by the respondent appears in the list of
SC/ST pertaining to each State.

Name of the religion along with relevant code
should be properly entered under question 7 in
respect of those persons who furnish Code “1” i.e.
Scheduled Caste can only be among Hindus, Sikhs
and Buddhists.
Question No. 8 (b) : If SC or ST write name of the SC or ST
from the list supplied
(1) For a person recorded as “Code 1” i.e. Scheduled
Caste, write the name of the Scheduled Caste in
full .
(2) For a person recorded as “Code 2” i.e. Scheduled
Tribe write the name of the Scheduled Tribe in full.
(3) For a person who has been recorded as “Code 3”
i.e. neither SC/ST, put a dash in this column.
Question No. 8 :
Important to remember :(1) If a respondent returns his/her Caste / Tribe by a
synonym or generic name, it can be accepted only
if the name is mentioned in the list furnished to the
Census functionaries.
(2) If due to any organised movement in the area, the
response to this Question is not being furnished
truthfully, responses to be recorded as furnished
and enumerator to be directed to report the matter
to the supervisor for verification.

(3) This question to be asked in respect of all
members of the household as members may not
always belong to the same Caste / Tribe.
Question No. 10: Mother Tongue:
Write name of the Mother tongue in full.
Important to remember :-
(1) Mother tongue is the language spoken in Childhood by
the person’s mother to the person.
(2) If mother has died in infancy, the language mainly
spoken in the person’s home in childhood will be the
mother tongue.

(3) In case of infants and deaf mute, the language spoken by the
mother should be recorded.
(4) In case of doubt, the language mainly spoken in the household
may be recorded.
(5) It is not necessary that the language returned as mother
tongue should have a script

–Liangmei (Nagaland), Lusai / Mizo (Mizoram):
Roman script
–Santali, Mundari, Ho, Kharia
• West Bengal: Bengali script
• Bihar/ Jharkhand – Hindi script
• Odisha – Oriya script
–Tulu (Karnataka): Kannada script
–Badaga (Tamil Nadu): Kannada script

(6) Record the name of the language returned by
the respondent as mother tongue in full.

Important to note :(i) If you have reasons to suspect that in any
area due to any organised movement, the
mother tongue is not being truthfully
returned, you should record the mother
tongue as actually returned by the
respondent and make a report to your
s u p e r v i s or y of f i c e r s for v e r if i c a t i o n .
Question No. 10: Mother Tongue:
(ii) You are not expected to determine if
the language returned by a person is a
dialect of another language.
(iii) You should not try to establish any
relationship between religion and mother
tongue.

(iv) You are bound to record the language
as returned for each person as her / his
mother tongue and you should not enter
into any argument. Do not try to record
any language other than what is returned
by the respondent
Question No. 10: Mother Tongue:
The mother tongue of each member of a
household need not necessarily be the same these may be different for different members
(related / unrelated) in the household. It is
absolutely necessary to ask of every person
about her / his mother tongue.
