Overview of the session
• The InCAS assessment software • Practical information for running the assessment • Feedback – Example Feedback – An exercise in interpreting feedback
The InCAS assessment software
InCAS
• For children aged 5 to 11 • Adaptive • Modular • Pupils operate their own computer • Can be sat by a whole class at once • Assessment once a year • Assessment at any time of the year • Results are diagnostic
InCAS
• Reading – Word Recognition, Decoding, Comprehension • General Maths – Number 1, Number 2, MSS, Data • Developed Ability – Picture Vocabulary, Non-verbal Ability • Spelling • Mental Arithmetic • Attitudes
AfE: InCAS
• Reading – Word Recognition – Select the target word from a choice of five high or medium frequency words on the screen. – Word Decoding - Select the target word from a choice of five nonsense or unfamiliar words on the screen. – Comprehension – The pupil reads through a passage and, when given a choice of three words, must select the word that fits into the sentence most appropriately.
AfE: InCAS
• General Maths – Number 1 – counting, informal arithmetic, partitioning and place value, fractions or decimals.
– Number 2 – sorting, patterns, formal arithmetic, problem solving and algebra. – Measures, Shape and Space – Data
AfE: InCAS
• Developed Ability – Picture Vocabulary – The pupil hears a word and selects the picture that best represents that word from a choice of five pictures on the screen.
– Non-verbal ability – A pattern appears on the left hand side of the screen and the pupil must then find the corresponding pattern within a larger pattern on the right hand side of the screen. The pattern may have been translated in position but
will not
have been rotated or reflected.
Progression through sub tests
• Mental Arithmetic o Addition (all pupils) o Subtraction (If addition age > 5) o Multiplication (If subtraction age > 7) o Division (If multiplication age > 8) • Reading o Comprehension (If Word Decoding and Word Recognition ages < 4 years)

Practical information for running the assessments
Session timings
• Reading • General Maths • Developed Ability • Spelling • Mental Arithmetic • Attitudes (20 - 25 minutes) (20 - 25 minutes) (20 - 25 minutes) (15 – 20 minutes) (15 – 20 minutes) (5 – 10 minutes)
Before beginning
• Checklist – 1 computer per pupil with software installed – 1 set of headphones per pupil with both earpieces functioning correctly – Password list – Remove or cover displays which could help the pupils with the assessments (e.g. number lines) – No pencil and paper to be used for the assessments
Progression through sub tests
• Mental Arithmetic o Addition (all pupils) o Subtraction (If addition age > 5) o Multiplication (If subtraction age > 7) o Division (If multiplication age > 8) • Reading o Comprehension (If Word Decoding and Word Recognition ages < )
Hints and Tips
• Make sure the pupils are comfortable • Remove any aids from the walls e.g. number lines • Make sure headphones are fully functioning • No pencil and paper • Have a break between assessments • Check pupil details on the log in screen
Hints and Tips
• Give an introduction beforehand – It should be explained to the pupils taking part that there is nothing to worry about – The pupils usually find the assessment is fun – Show examples of questions • If at any time they become confused, they should feel able to ask you for guidance (as long as this takes the form of explaining the procedure rather than providing clues to help them answer the question).
Hints and Tips
• If the Admin account is logged in the pupils cannot log in • If the pupils are logged in the Admin account cannot be accessed • If the Admin account is logged in another Admin account cannot log in at the same time
Feedback
InCAS Feedback
