WHAT IS PSYCHOLOGY
‘It is a field of inquiry that is sometimes defined
as the science of the mind, sometimes as the
science of behaviour. It concerns itself with how
and why organisms do what they do; why wolves
howl at the moon and children rebel against their
parents; why birds sing and moths fly into the
flame; why we remember to ride a bicycle twenty
years after the last try; why humans speak and
make love and war. All of these are behaviours,
and psychology is the science that studies them
all.’ (Gleitman, 1995)
THE SCOPE OF PSYCHOLOGY
‘the phenomena that psychology takes as its
province cover an enormous range. Some border
on biology; others touch on social sciences such as
anthropology and sociology. Some concern
behaviour in animals; many others pertain to
behaviours in humans. Some are about conscious
experiences; others focus on what people do
regardless of what they may think or feel inside.
Some involve humans or animals in isolation;
others concern with what they do when they are
in groups.’ (Gleitman, 1995)
