Mohandas Gandhi
Trained as a lawyer, Gandhi became the leader of the
Indian independence movement. Gandhi believed
strongly in:
• Civil Disobedience: refusal to obey laws you
believe are unjust.
• Passive resistance: peaceful resistance to a
government by fasting or refusing to cooperate.
• Boycott: the act of refusing to use, buy or deal with
an organization or its products as an expression of
protest.

The Indian National Congress
 1885  The Indian National Congress
was founded in Bombay.

Amritsar Massacre
• 1919-British troops killed hundreds of
unarmed protesters who had gathered
in the city of Amritsar.
• The violence horrified Gandhi, but
solidified support for the Independence
movement.
Homespun Movement
• One of India’s most famous boycotts was
Gandhi’s “homespun” movement.
– British plantations used Indian people and land to
grow cotton but then made clothes in England
– They Brought the clothes back to sell to Indians at
inflated prices
– It was illegal for Indian companies to manufacture
and sell clothing that was not made from British
cloth!
– Gandhi called for a boycott of all British made
cloth!
Salt March
• 1930-Britain introduced measures increasing
the salt tax and prohibiting the Indian people
form manufacturing or harvesting their own
salt.
• Gandhi protested these measures by walking
240 miles to the sea on what became known
as the Salt March.
• Upon reaching the coast Gandhi picked up a
pinch of salt in defiance of the British.

Could you be the next Gandhi?
Here’s the situation. Imagine that the administration of Hilhi
decided to start segregating students by their grade point
averages. Starting tomorrow you had to wear a badge telling
your cumulative GPA on your shirt, students above a 3.5 could
come and go from classes as they pleased, eat lunch first
(lunch would also be much better for those students), and
have a shorter school year. Students below a 3.0 would have
to go to school from 7:15-5:00, their bell schedule would be
strictly controlled, and they would be treated very poorly by
their teachers and the administration.
Design a civil disobedience campaign to end these
practices. Remember, no violence!
