Understanding the
Purpose of both the
Bread Miracles
Mark 8:1-10; John 6:25-40
Mark 8:1
• In those days the multitude
being very great, and having
nothing to eat, Jesus called his
disciples unto him, and saith
unto them,
Mark 8:2
• I have compassion on the multitude,
because they have now been with
me three days, and have nothing to
eat:
Previously, Christ said:
Feeding of the 5000
Mark 6:34
• And Jesus, when he came out, saw
much people, and was moved with
compassion toward them, because they
were as sheep not having a
shepherd: and he began to teach them
many things.
Mark 8:3
• And if I send them away fasting
to their own houses, they will
faint by the way: for divers of
them came from far.
Tough Question
If Christ has already fed 5000,
why are the disciples asking
the question found in
Mark 8:4?
Mark 8:4
• And his disciples answered him,
From whence can a man
satisfy these men with
bread here in the
wilderness?
This Question
Has caused some to speculate as
to whether there were actually
two events as recorded by both
Matthew and Mark, or is this a
doublet?

Mark 8:17-21
Commentary
• Mark’s probable motive for arranging
his material in this manner was to show
how the dullness of the disciples
required that Jesus repeat His teaching
and miracles before they could
understand.

Mark 8:5
• And he asked them, How
many loaves have ye? And
they said, Seven.
Mark 8:6
• And he commanded the people to sit
down on the ground: and he took the
seven loaves, and gave thanks, and
brake, and gave to his disciples to set
before them; and they did set them
before the people.
Mark 8:7-8
• And they had a few small fishes: and he
blessed, and commanded to set them
also before them.
• So they did eat, and were filled: and
they took up of the broken meat that
was left seven baskets.
Mark 8:9
• And they that
had eaten
were about
four
thousand:
and he sent
them away.
What was the
point of both
of these
feeding
miracles?

Commentary on Mark
Turn to John 6
John 6:1-13
Feeding of the 5000
John 6:14
• Then those men, when they had
seen the miracle that Jesus did,
said, This is of a truth that
prophet that should come into
the world [Deut 18:18].
Deuteronomy 18:18
• I [YHWH] will raise them up a
Prophet from among their brethren
[Jews], like unto thee [Moses], and
will put my words in his mouth; and
he shall speak unto them all that I
[YHWH] shall command him.
John 6:22
• The day following, when the people which
stood on the other side of the sea saw that
there was none other boat there, save that
one whereinto his disciples were entered,
and that Jesus went not with his disciples
into the boat, but that his disciples were
gone away alone;
John 6:24
• When the people therefore saw that
Jesus was not there, neither his
disciples, they also took shipping,
and came to Capernaum, seeking
for Jesus.
John 6:25
• And when they had found him on
the other side of the sea, they said
Rabbi, when
camest thou hither?
unto him,
John 6:26
• Jesus answered them and said, Verily,
verily, I say unto you, Ye seek
me, not because ye saw the
miracles, but because ye did
eat of the loaves, and were
filled.
John 6:27a
• Labour not for the meat [food]
which perisheth, but for that meat
[food] which endureth unto
everlasting life, which the Son of
man shall give unto you:
John 6:27b
•for him
hath God the
Father sealed.
John 6:28
• Then said they unto him, What
shall
we do, that we might work
the works of God?
This is very similar to, “What do I need
to do to have eternal life?”
John 6:29
• Jesus answered and said unto them,
This is the work of God, that
ye believe on him whom he
hath sent.
Have faith in, lean on, trust on, depend upon, rely upon
John 6:30
These are those who just saw Him feed
5000 people
• They said therefore unto him, What
sign shewest thou then, that we
may see, and believe thee? what
dost thou work? Our…
John 6:31
• Our fathers did eat manna in the
desert; as it is written, He gave
them bread from heaven to
eat.
Exodus 16:15
John 6:32
Almost a Rebuke
• Then Jesus said unto them, Verily,
verily, I say unto you, Moses gave
you NOT that bread from heaven;
but my Father giveth you the true
bread from heaven.
YHWH YHWH
Moses Jesus
John 6:33
Jesus Continues:
he
• For the bread of God is
which cometh down from
heaven, and giveth life unto the
world.
Let’s Be Clear Here
Eating the Manna in the
desert did NOT result in
eternal life!
Likewise
not all of the 5000 or all of the 4000
that ate bread from Jesus will be in
heaven
John 6:34
They are DULL
• Then said they unto him, Lord,
evermore give us this
bread.
Paul Said
1 Corinthians 1:18
• For the preaching of the cross is
to them that perish foolishness;
but unto us which are saved it is
the power of God.
John 6:35
• And Jesus said unto them, I am the
bread of life: he that cometh to
me shall never hunger; and he
that believeth on me shall never
thirst.
John 6:36-37
• But I said unto you, That ye also have
seen me, and believe not.
• All that the Father giveth me shall
come to me; and him that cometh
to me I will in no wise cast out.
John 6:38-39
• For I came down from heaven, not to do
mine own will, but the will of him that
sent me. And this is the Father’s will
which hath sent me, that of all which he
hath given me I should lose nothing, but
should raise it up again at the last day.
John 6:40
• And this is the will of him that
sent me, that every one which
seeth the Son, and believeth on
him, may have everlasting life:
and I will raise him up at the last
day.
Conclusion #1
• Jesus provided bread from heaven
to validate and authenticate that He
was the ultimate Prophet whom
God would send in the like manner
as Moses.
Conclusion #2
• Jesus provided bread from
heaven as a symbol or type of
what He is to be in our lives as
the ONE who sustains and
nourishes us into everlasting life.
Conclusion #3
• Only those who believe in
Jesus as their all-sufficient, allsatisfying Bread of Life can be
assured that they will be raised
up at the last day.
