• • October 1, 1860 My name is Jethroe Williams and I live in Washington DC. I believe the event that pulled us the furthest apart was the Compromise of 1850 which allowed California to come in as a free state. This disrupted the Delicate Balance and allowed abolitionist supporters to elect Abraham Lincoln who opposed slavery. The whole war was caused by slavery, no matter which way one looks at it, all the problems that one faced stemmed from this evil practice. Some may say that it was a fight against an oppressive National government. However, would any one of these actions have happened without slavery? Therefore, I strongly argue that the cause of this war is slavery and the Compromise of 1850 is the primary event that prompted the bloodiest War in the history of the US with more than 700,000 dead Americans.
