Ya es tiempo de hacer algo…
¿Qué piensas hacer
para servir
a los demás?
Atención Estudiantes de
Español 4, 5, 6,y 7
• Fall is a great time to look for
opportunities to serve others!
• This year you may be invited to have
the honor of being inducted into a
very prestigious national organization.
Before initiation (usually around February),
you will need to have
completed 10 community
service/participation hours
working to better the
LATINO or SPANISH-SPEAKING
community in order
to qualify for membership.
What organization am I talking about?
The Nathan Hale Chapter of the
Spanish National Honor Society.
LA SOCIEDAD
HONORARIA
HISPANICA
Capítulo Volcán Arenal
Why Volcán Arenal chapter?
Our chapter name was chosen because
the Arenal Volcano in Costa Rica
is a very
active and powerful volcano.
On a daily basis it can be
heard and seen
making a difference
in the climate of the region.
Why Volcán Arenal chapter?
We hope that the members of the
Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica
Capítulo Volcán Arenal
do the same, that they be active
members
who are powerful in their service to others
and that they be heard and seen
making a difference everyday
in the climate of our community.
So how do I
become a
member?

recognized as one hour of time. If you feel that you deserve more
than one hour, it must be cleared prior with one of the advisors.
• Attendance/participation in field trips will be recognized as one hour
no matter how long the field trip takes.
• You must document (with signature & phone number) the adult in
charge of your service position. This adult cannot be related to you.
What could I do
to serve others
in the
Latino Community?

Spanish speaking clients,

volunteer in a health clinic
which serves lower income,
impoverished people or
Spanish speakers.
• shadow and assist a Public
Ally who works with the
inner city community.
• volunteer at a local food
pantry which serves a
predominantly Latino

•Volunteer to work at
Mexican Fiesta in

Since 1977 Mexican Fiesta brings a taste of Mexico to Milwaukee.
Sharing Mexico’s history, food, and entertainment for three
wonderful days, our public has responded with open arms to this
festival every year. We have had breathtaking entertainers.
Mexican Fiesta has become an enormous success with the help of
the community and the thousands of people who attend this
incredible festival.

by tutoring after school.

• Will be supervised by a teacher in library.
• Plan and execute an activity which promotes
language and culture for many students.
(Zumbathon 2010-2013)
• Plan and execute an activity which

interACTion” while studying
abroad on a school
sponsored study/travel trip.
(maximum 1 hour)
• Perform using your musical
talents gratis, for those in a
community or recreation
center which serves
predominantly Latinos.
• other pre-approved
activities that you can
think of…
…the sky’s the limit!
• See Profe Geboy-Helfenstein, Room
272, or Profa. Santiago for approval of
community service opportunities.
FYI:
• Since there is no money in the budget for the language
honor societies, the advisors receive NO monetary
compensation for the time spent organizing and carrying
out membership, induction and other activities.
• Leading these societies are not positions like other Hale
club advisors or athletic team coaches.
• Therefore, Profe Geboy-Helfenstein and Senora Santiago
will occasionally be willing to offer organized group
community service activities which occur outside of the
normal school day.
• However, much of the SERVICE requirement must be
initiated and carried out by the students themselves as
proof of their leadership abilities.
• This leadership is demonstrated in their ability to find a
service opportunity which they feel will best serve their
future interests using the Spanish Language (preferably)
or by assisting those in the local community.
• In order to be a member of
La Sociedad Honoraria
Hispanica, you need to
want to serve others.
• If you think you may qualify for
Spanish NHS (because your
semester grades have been
consistently highA / B+),
please review them & then pass
them on to Profe G-H or Señora
Santiago.
