Germany at the Olympics

• Since 1896, when the first Olympics of the modern era was held, Germany has participated in most Olympic Games.

• Germany was banned from participating in the Olympics for a time after both World Wars. • Germany was divided into two countries from 1945 to 1990. During this time, both West Germany and East Germany boycotted one game each due to political reasons.

Olympics held in Germany

• Germany has hosted the Olympic Games three times. In 1936, Germany hosted both the Winter Games in Garmisch Partenkirchen and the Summer Games in Berlin. • In 1972, Germany hosted the Summer Olympics in Munich.

• Germany was due to host the 1916 Summer Olympics and the 1940 Winter Olympics, but both these games had to be cancelled due to World Wars.

German Olympic medals

• Including the Winter Games of 2010, German athletes have won a total of 1618 medals: 528 gold, 542 silver and 548 bronze. • At the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, the German team came fifth in the medal league table, with 16 gold, 10 silver and 15 bronze medals.

Germany at the Paralympics

• West Germany participated in the first international Paralympic Games, which were held in 1960 in Rome. • Athletes from East Germany only competed once at the Paralympics in 1984. Since the reunification of Germany in 1990, German athletes have competed together again. • Germany hosted the 1972 Summer Paralympics in Heidelberg.
