The Ministry of Tourism is mandated to promote
tourism in the country in a responsible and
sustainable manner through inclusive growth and
holistic approach for development and promotion of
tourism

Vision – next five years
The Ministry of Tourism will strive to achieve 1 percent of World
Tourist Arrivals, inter-alia, by promoting safe and sustainable tourism,
developing world class infrastructure and Human Resource Mass,
focusing on development of established as well as lesser known
destinations and Niche products, undertake aggressive marketing,
creating affordable accommodation, improving Rail, Road and Air
connectivity in collaboration with various industry stakeholders and in
coordination with various other Ministries/ Organisations of the
Government of India and the States & the UT Administrations

FUTURE GOALS
• Achieve 1% share of Global Foreign Tourist Arrivals, i.e.
11.24 million FTAs
• Be in top 50 countries in competitive ranking (68th in
2011)
• 145 Crore Domestic Tourist Visits by 2016-17
• Additional employment generation of 2.45 crore

TOURISM SCENARIO : 2013
• Foreign Tourist Arrivals: 69.7 Lakh / Growth 5.93% (Global: 5%)
• India’s share in global arrivals : 0.64%
• Foreign Exchange Earnings: US$18.445 bn (3.99% growth)
• India’s share in global receipts : 1.59%
• Domestic Tourist Visits 114.53 Cr (growth rate 9.59%)
• Tourism share in GDP 6.88% (3.74% direct + 3.14% indirect)
• Employment share 12.36% (5.31% direct + 7.05% indirect)

TOURISM SCENARIO : 2014
• Foreign Tourism Arrivals (FTAs)
• August 2014 - 5.69 lakhs
• August 2013 - 4.86 lakhs
• Growth rate in FTAs in August 2014 over August, 2013 is 16.9%
• Foreign Tourism Arrivals (FTAs)
• January-August 2014 46.84 lakh - growth of 7.4%
• January-August 2013 43.60 lakh - growth of 4.9%
• World growth rate is 4.6% during January to June 2014 as per
UNWTO report
• Foreign Exchange Earning (FEE)
• August 2014 – US$ 1.684 billion
• Growth rate – 26.8% over August 2013

INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT
•
Two new Schemes announced:
• Developing 5 tourist circuits around specific themes.
• National Mission on Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation
Drive (PRASAD).
•
50 Circuits identified for development in phases
•
Special assistance of Rs.100 Cr for reconstruction of damaged tourism
infrastructure in J&K announced
•
Strategies for integrated development of core Buddhist circuits launched
•
Ganga Rejuvenation – Mega Project for development of Varanasi Ghats ready
for launch
•
Project for construction of new Passenger Terminal at Marmugao, Port Trust to
promote Cruises launched

PUBLICITY, PROMOTION
& MARKETING
•
Second International Buddhist Conclave in collaboration with State
Governments of Bihar and UP in Bodhgaya and Sarnath scheduled from 26th 28th September, 2014
•
International Tourism Mart in North East Region at Shillong scheduled from
13th to 15th October, 2014.
•
TV commercials on north-eastern region and Jammu & Kashmir produced
•
9 City maps uploaded on official website
•
Organized Road Shows in USA, Europe and China in collaboration with stake
holders.
•
The markets for opening of India Tourism Marketing representatives (ITMR)
finalized & RFP formulated.

SAFE AND HONOURABLE TOURISM
Ministry of tourism Organised National
Conference of State Tourism Ministers on
21.8.2014 with special emphasis on safe and
honourable tourism.
All the State Government/UT Administration
resolved to continue to ensure the safety and
security of all the tourists specially women tourists.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT
• Tie up with Ecole Hotelier de Lausanne, Switzerland for improving
quality of Hospitality Education.
• Foundation stone laid for Indian Culinary Institute in Tirupati
• Decision to set up Sector Skill Council (SSC)
• 11367 persons trained under Hunar Se Rozgar Tak scheme in this financial
year upto 31st August, 2014
• Launch of Culinary Survey of India, for identification and documentation
of recipes
• Chinese Tourist Facilitator Training Course for the Executives of tour
operators organised
• Six months certificate courses in 4 hospitality trades launched

REFORMS IN HOTEL & RESTAURANTS
CLASSIFICATION GUIDELINES
• Guidelines revised for classification / re- classification for
the hotels under 5 Star, 4 Star, Heritage Classic categories with alcohol service or without alcohol service
• Hotel Classification/re-classification/application system
simplified
• Sensitization workshops on Bed & Breakfast scheme
organised in all States/UTs
• List of Bed & Breakfast units hosted on website

NICHE TOURISM
• Comprehensive Sustainable Tourism Criteria for India
(STCI) for Accommodation, Tour Operators and
Beaches, Backwaters, Lakes & Rivers sectors launched
• Workshop conducted to sensitise all stakeholders on STCI
• Guidelines for promotion of Golf Tourism revised
• Guidelines for promotion of Wellness & Medical tourism
revised
• Scheme for use of Satellite Phones for Adventure Tour
Operators drafted

USE OF TECHNOLOGY
FOR SERVICE DELIVERY
• Electronic Visa on Arrival (ETA) announced
• New features added to upgrade website www.incredibleindia.org (Walking
Tours, Audio-Tours, Holiday Planner , 360 degree view of monuments)
• Translation of incredibleindia.org begun in 8 International languages viz.
Arabic, Chinese (simplified) French, German, Japanese, Russian, Korean
and Spanish, in addition to English and Hindi
• An online Financial Accounting System ( FAS) implemented by the
Overseas offices
• Mobile application for listing of classified Hotels and recognized Tour
Operator/Travel Agents launched
• On-line computerized Institute Management System for IHMs/FCIs
being prepared

MARKET RESEARCH
• Two baseline surveys on Domestic Tourism expenditure
and International Passenger undertaken
• Estimates of contribution of Tourism in GDP &
Employment for the Financial Year 2012-13 finalised
• Methodology for Cleanliness Index drafted and Index
calculated for six cities on pilot basis
