an experience
a person: appearance, personality, action*
a place: clockwise, counterclockwise
a memory
an object
Example
• I grew tired after dinner.
• As I leaned back and rested my head against
the top of the chair, my eyelids began to feel
heavy, and the edges of the empty plate in
front of me blurred with the white tablecloth.

Example of describing a person
He has a potbelly and a squeaky
voice. His arms and legs are as thin
as sticks. He wears funny-looking red
shorts with big white buttons, and he
has big round black ears and a
pointed nose.
Describing a Place: Gathering Details
• Sensory details
my team running onto the field (sight)
the crack of the bat (hearing)
smooth wooden seats (touch)
hot dogs cooking (smell)
warm, buttery popcorn (taste)
• Factual details
• Figurative details
• Thoughts and feelings
Describing a Place: Organizing details
• Spatial Order
from top to down
from left to right
clockwise/counterclockwise
• Order of Importance
from least important to most important
from most important to least important
Example of describing a place
Located about fifty kilometers off the coast of
Taitung County, Orchid Island is a magical spot set in
the deep blue Pacific Ocean. From the air, the
mountains peak out from the clouds as you approach
the island. As your airplane lands, you can see the
green fields and woods along with the blue water. On
arriving, you can catch sight of fishing and farming
villages. From the mountaintops to the crashing
waves on the rocky beaches, Orchid Island, a
paradise waiting to be discovered, seems frozen in
time.
Another Example
Moist and salty, a chilly breeze blows in across
the swells, bringing with it the pungent smells
of seaweed and fish and making me pull my
jacket a little closer. Sea spray transforms into
fiery prisms as the waves splash against the
shore, catch the last golden rays of sun, and
toss them up like liquid crystals.
