Five Senses Unit Plan

 7 day unit plan  Intended for preschool children  Introduces the five senses and their uses in exploring our environment  Brief discussion of parts of body used for each

 2 to 4 year old preschool children  Fully inclusive classroom  Parents fully involved  Hands-on activities to best support age group

Utilize Media and Material: Day 1: Introduction

 Introduction to the five senses  Review location of nose, ears, mouth, eyes, and hands  Sing five senses song  Explore interactive five senses online book  Review handout for parents

Day 2: Taste

 Song about senses of taste  Discuss mouth and four types of taste  Sample lemonade/ sour, candy/ sweet, potato chips/ salty, and unsweetened chocolate/ bitter  Read Taste by Maria Rius  Review handout for parents

Day 3: Smell

 Song about senses of smell  “What’s that smell?” game  Read Smell by Maria Rius  Review handout for parents

Day 4: Touch

 Song about sense of touch  Experiment with shaving cream/ slimy, sandpaper/ rough, play dough/ squishy, tape/ sticky, fake fur/ soft  Read Touch by Maria Rius  Review handout for parents

Day 5: Hearing

 Song about hearing  Use objects to make sounds  Explore loud/ quiet and high/ low sounds  Read Hearing by Maria Rius  Review handout for parents

Day 6: Sight

Day 7: Review

Required Learner Participation

 Regular schedule throughout unit plan  Short, fun activities  Children participate in group activities  Games and materials left out at a center for children to explore throughout the day on their own
