• Do you think that most people feel the need to be a little better
than their friends? Is this a necessary part of friendship? Can
you be friends with someone who you think is superior to you?
• How do you see this play into Amir and Hassan’s friendship? Are
they truly friends? Please cite at least one passage in your
response.

Group Character Map
1. With your group, pick out the five central characters in KR 1-3.
2. Map them out in a way that makes sense. (Social hierarchy?
Father-son? Equals? . . . Anything that makes sense to you).
3. For each character, draw a symbol that represents this character
and write his name inside. Be creative, but pick a symbol that fits
what you know about this character.
4. For each character, include a quote that reveals something
significant about this character. Write this quote inside the
symbol or along the borders—you could even make it a part of
the drawing!
5. Draw lines between the characters, and explain on the lines the
nature of the relationships between these characters (go beyond
the obvious, why are the characters important to one another?)

• For each chapter, please find the following:
• One passage you have a question about; form a discussion question
for this passage.
• One passage that contains a possible symbol; analyze what you see
as the deeper significance of this symbol.
• One passage that relates back to our unit questions; explain what it
reveals about “family.”
• You can either annotate directly in your book, or you may TYPE
your responses.
• All annotations will be collected at the end, and they may collected
at any time without prior announcement.

playing with other rich kids he never includes Haasan. I feel like he
is embarassed of Haasan even though Haasan is his true friend.”

• Create a “Wanted Sign” for this monster in which
you include the following:
 A symbolic picture of your monster
 Description of your monster and its alleged crime
 What this monster is armed with
 What to do if you catch this monster
 Somewhere in your descriptions, you must
include a passage from the text.
•Please be respectful of the nature of this tragedy and
please do not turn this into a joke.
