The Rotary Youth Exchange Experience, a year living and studying in a new and different culture, changes students

Much of the change is due to the experience of a different culture and the slow, sometimes difficult process of adapting

In order to adapt successfully to another culture, the student must go through identifiable stages of culture shock, and upon return to home, reverse culture shock

But before discussing these topics, we need to first begin with “culture”

Culture

文化 An integrated system of learned behavior patterns that are characteristic of any given society. It refers to the total way of life, including how people think, feel and behave.

Metaphorically, culture is the lens through which we view the world.

You can’t trust your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.

Mark Twain

Think of awareness of other cultures as the same as awareness of color. If you are color blind, there are certain colors you cannot see, no matter how hard you try.

If you are “culture blind” you cannot understand other cultures, no matter how hard you try

Under pressure, we tend to fall back on what is comfortable, habitual, and unconscious.

Even when we know how to follow a cultural practice, and can do it, the tendency is to fall back.

The Rebound Prayer 歸國後的祈禱 (Finlandia) (芬蘭) This is my prayer, oh God of all the nations, A prayer of peace for lands afar and mine, This is my home, the country where my heart lies, Here lie my hopes my dreams like stars that shine.

But other hearts in other lands are beating, With hopes and dreams as true and high as mine.

My country’s skies are bluer than the ocean, And sunlight beams on cloverleaf and pine.

But other lands have sunlight too and clover, And skies are everywhere as blue as mine.

Oh hear my prayer oh God of all the nations, A prayer of peace, for their lands and for mine.
