LANGUAGE NOTES
1)... the sky looks kind of funny.
“天看起来有些奇怪。”
 kind of相当于somewhat或a little,意思是“有点,或多或少”,
常见于口语或非正式书面语; kind of后面往往跟形容词或名词,
如:Bruce Lee is kind of a legend.“李小龙多少算是个传奇人
物。”
2) It covers an area of 22,500 m2 which is about the same size as
three football pitches, and the temperature is a constant -1℃
to -2℃ .
“它占地22 500平方米,大约是三个足球场的面积,温度恒
定在-1℃~-2℃。”



cover的原意是“覆盖”,这里指“占地多少面积”;
the same size as ...“与……大小、尺寸或面积相同”;
Constant adj.“固定不变的,恒定的”。
II. READING (4)

spend time/money on something或spend time/money (on)
doing something,“花时间/金钱用来做某事”。
facility作为不可数名词表示“能力,技能”,其复数形式
facilities表示“设备,设施”。

“足球不是生死攸关的事情,它比生死还重要!”
a matter of…这里的意思是“关乎(与…相关)”.另一个相似
的常见短语是as a matter of fact,意为“事实上”。
much可以修饰形容词和副词的比较级,意为“…得多”

make在这里是一个使役动词,后接省to的不定式做宾语的
补足语,类似的动词还有leave,get,keep,make, let,
help,have
“wonder + if从句”结构在文中表示“觉得,认为”,该结构
也可以用来提出请求或表示疑问,
如:I was wondering if you could get to your office by eight.
“请你八点以前到办公室。”
sports-lover和game-player是两个复合词,词尾-er往往表示
某类人,如:sports-lover,“热爱体育的人”;game-player,
“玩游戏的人”。
II. READING (6)

after all,“毕竟”;
despite,介词,意为“虽然,尽管”,后接名词或动名词;
help someone to do something,“帮助某人做某事”,也常

用暴力的球迷。
II. READING (8)
8) Games help us perfect our skills and prepare us for the
serious contest of survival. “游戏帮助我们完善竞技技能,为现
实中的生存竞争做好准备。”


perfect作为形容词的意思是“完美的”,这里用做及物动词,
perfect something,意为“使某事物完善”。
prepare someone for something,“使某人准备好应对某
事”;另一个常见的表达是someone is prepared for
something,“某人为某事已经做好准备”。
II. READING (9)
9)A recent article in New Scientist suggests that playing violent
video games makes people more aggressive, more likely to
commit violent crimes and less likely to help others. “最近《新
科学家》里一篇文章认为,玩暴力画面游戏(其中大多数十分暴力)让
人们更有攻击性,更可能施暴犯罪,而不会去帮助别人。”



suggest,“暗示,认为,建议”;当其表示“建议”时,宾语从句
需要用虚拟语气:suggest that+主语+(should)+动词原形。
当其表示“认为,暗示”时,宾语从句用陈述语气。
例如:I suggest that we (should)go home now.
我建议我们现在回家吧。
commit a crime,固定搭配,“犯罪“;
be likely to do something,“有可能做某事”,
例如: My sister is likely to get married next year.
我妹妹可能明年结婚。
II. READING (10)

distinguish reality from virtual reality? “游戏会不会变得这

“so + adj. + that + 从句”的结构表示“如此……以至于 ……”,

You must learn to distinguish good from evil.
