Electronic Device Policy
Tuesday, August 19th, 7th period
When may electronic
devices be used?

Where may electronic
devices be used?
• Electronic devices will be allowed in
common areas:
o Cafeteria
o Courtyard
o Hallways
• Electronic devices will NOT be allowed in
classrooms / instructional areas (including
media center, gym, green house, etc.)
May I talk on the phone
while at school?
• Phone calls are only allowed in the
cafeteria before school and during
lunch periods.
• Phone calls are not allowed during
class changes and other transitions.
May I listen to music
while at school?
• Students may listen to music through
headphones or ear buds in the
cafeteria before school or during
lunch periods.
• Music may not be played openly
without headphones or ear buds.
• Music/Headphones may not be used
during class transitions.
What about headphones?
• Headphones and ear buds are only allowed
to be used by the students in the cafeteria
before school and in the cafeteria during
lunch periods.
• Students will be allowed to use headphones
or ear buds during the approved time
provided the student is still able to respond
to auditory commands communicated by
school personnel.
What about Videos and
Social Media?
• Students shall not use electronic devices to
capture video, audio or photos of other
people at school unless used under the
guidance of a teacher and related to
curriculum objectives.
• Posting of photos, video, etc. will result in
disciplinary consequences.
Can my phone be
confiscated?
• YES
• Electronic devices should be powered off
during class time. Devices heard or seen in use
during instructional times or in instructional
areas, including in silent mode, will be
confiscated and returned to a parent for a $25
fee. The student will also receive ISS.
• Electronic devices being used in an
inappropriate manner may be confiscated and
returned to a parent for a $25 fee. The student
will also receive ISS.
Can my phone be
confiscated?
• The point:
oIf your phone is confiscated for
ANY reason, you will receive ISS
AND your parent has to pick up
the phone for a $25 fee.
Who is responsible if the
device is lost or stolen?
• The student must secure his/her device at all times
and never leave it unattended. Students should
guard against theft as they would in any public
building or area.
• Theft of such devices is a major problem in schools,
and often the devices cannot be recovered.
• Students should keep the devices on their persons
at all times or locked away.
• School personnel and/or administrators are not
responsible for the loss, theft, or damage of any cell
phone or device brought on school property.
What about cheating?
• If students use communication devices to illegally
enhance their own academic performance or
another student’s performance (cheat), the
student(s) involved will receive additional severe
consequences for academic dishonesty and may
be banned from having such a device for the
remainder of their attendance in Dorchester Two
schools.
What about other
inappropriate behavior?
• If students use the communication devices
to engage in illegal or unethical behavior
such as bullying, harassing, threatening, or
intimidating, the students involved will
receive additional severe consequences for
such conduct and may be banned from
having such a device for the remainder of
their attendance in Dorchester Two schools.
Possible Consequences
• Confiscation of electronic device ($25
fee) AND In School Suspension
• Out of School Suspension
• School Probation
• Loss of extracurricular activities
Rules regarding the Policy
• 1st Offense (confiscation) – 1 day of ISS
AND parent pick up for $25 fee
• 2nd offense (confiscation) – 1 day of ISS
AND OSS and parent pick up with
administrator conference
• 3rd offense (confiscation) – 3 days of OSS
and parent pick up administrator
conference
• Failure to hand over an electronic device
results in an automatic suspension
• Electronic Device infractions also result in
loss of parking priviledges
