What is an Annotated Bibliography?




An annotated bibliography is an alphabetical listing of
research sources accompanied by a narrative that summarizes
and/or evaluates the research source.
The bibliography is a listing of the research sources which
includes books, scholarly articles, magazines, websites, etc.
The annotation is a narrative description, evaluation, or
summary of the research source.
The purpose of the annotation is to provide information about
the quality, authority, and relevance of the research source.

The purpose of this study was to see to what degree of stress students had and to
find out how each of those students coped with the stress. In this study, two

For the purpose of this annotated bibliography assignment, you
are to provide specific information about the research
discussed in the peer reviewed journal articles. In writing the
annotation you must answer the following questions:
 What was the purpose of the study?
 Who were the subjects studied?
 What was the number of subjects in the study?
 What transpired in the study?
 What were the results (findings) and conclusions of the
study?
 How is this study relevant to your transition to SJSU?
APA Format

Citing Articles in Periodicals
Author, W. S., & Author, B. C. (Year). Title of the
article. Title of the Journal, volume number(issue number),
pages.
Todd, J., & Mullan, B. (2014). The role of self-monitoring and
response inhibition in improving sleep behaviours. International

APA Format: General Rules
Every line after the first line of the citation should
be indented one-half inch from the left margin 5
to 7 spaces; this indentation is called a hanging
indent.

volume number(issue number), pages.
Citing Authors in Periodicals

The author’s names are listed starting with the last
name first (spelled out) followed by the initials of
their first and middle names. Notice authors are not
listed in alpha order; they are listed as they appear
in journal article.

The “and” sign, &, (ampersand) is used before the
last author is listed in the citation, except when there
are 7 or more authors.

If an article has more than 7 authors, list the first six
authors and then use 3 periods (…) after the 6th
author’s name (the periods are also known as

Rules for citing in Periodicals

The title of article is listed in sentence-case format,
where only the first letter of the first word of the
title is capitalized, except proper nouns and the first
letter of the word after a colon or dash. A period is
placed at the end of the title.

The journal title is then listed in title case,
where the first letter of each word is
capitalized; the journal title is also italicized
and followed by a comma.

italicized, and issue number (not italicized), in
parentheses, followed by a comma and the page


Two ways to identify location of online sources:
 DOI – digital object identifier, a permanent location


