Lets start by
exploring ‘light’.

Refraction
Have you ever looked at a
glass of water with a straw
inside and wondered why it
looked bent?
This is called ‘refraction’.
Image:
http://physics.tutorvista.com/light/index-of-refraction.html
http://www.thewondersofnature.net/2012_09_01_archive.html
http://www.tim-pearce.com/paintings/refraction.html
Refraction
Refraction happens because light
slows down and can bends when
travelling through water at an
angle.
This gives the impression
the straw is bent.
To see how light travels lets pretend
the yellow line is light and a straw.
If the light or straw is vertical then the
light or straw does not appear bent.

Let’s recap on what we have learnt so far…
some amazing things…
Light
• can help keep us warm, help grow plants
and provide power through solar panels
• naturally travels in a straight line
• can also be reflected, refracted and
bent through different mediums and
materials
In the next lesson we will explore
“First camera ever”.
