Stay the Course
Selected Transitions and Changes
This means one of two things:
1. We are on a good course.
2. We see no need for a new course.

Continuous Transition and Change
This means two things:
1. Our basic framework is good.
2. We need intentional, continuous
improvement.
Congregational Ministry
Choices
Change the Course
Significant Transition and Change
This means two things:
1. Our basic framework needs to be
different.
2. We need intentional, significant
refocusing.

Radical Transition and Change
This means two things:
1. We need a different framework.
2. We need to start with a clean sheet of
paper.

Congregational Ministry
Choices
Stay the Course
Little or No Transition and Change
– Unrealistic, but popular
– We do not need to transition and change.
– We do not want to transition and change.
– We are not sure at this juncture we can
transition and change.
Congregational Ministry
Choices
Stay the Course
Incremental Innovations
– This works reasonably well for a while in a
stable congregation and context.
– We are willing to engage in incremental
innovations, primarily of a technical
nature.

Congregational Ministry
Choices
Modify the Course
Neighborhood or Community Focused
Congregation
–We choose to focus or refocus on a
specific neighborhood or series of
neighborhoods known as a community.
–We are unable to focus on people outside
our neighborhood or community.
Congregational Ministry
Choices
Modify the Course
Multiple Communities Congregation
–We choose to focus both on a specific
neighborhood or community, and the people
who travel to our site from other
neighborhoods or communities.
–Our leadership may travel to our site from
another neighborhood or community.
Congregational Ministry
Choices
Modify the Course
Multiple Generations Congregation
–We choose to focus on more than three
birth generations.
–This means we will need multiple styles of
worship, discipleship, fellowship, and
missional engagement.

Multiple Worshiping Communities
Congregation
–We choose to offer multiple approaches to
worship during various days/times.
–We have three or more worshiping
communities.

Choices
Change the Course
• Special Focus Congregation
• Multiple Congregations Within a
Congregation
• Metropolitan Regional Congregation
Congregational Ministry
Choices
Change the Course
Special Focus Congregation
–We choose to focus on a certain age group,
racial/ethnic group, lifestyle group, doctrinal
focus, or Christian cause.
–Other people are welcome, but we will not
intentionally focus on their spiritual needs.
Congregational Ministry
Choices
Change the Course
Multiple Congregations Within a
Congregation
–We choose to nest multiple congregations
of various diversities within out facilities.
–We may retain ownership of the facilities, or
we may create a new entity that owns the
facilities.
Congregational Ministry
Choices
Change the Course
Metropolitan Regional Congregation
–We choose to become a regional
congregation seeking to attract new people
from a 20 minute or more travel time radius
around our facilities.
–We have a base of at least 500 in weekly
attendance as we start this.

Choices
Plot a New Course
Merge with Other Congregations
–We choose to merge with two or more
congregations to create a new congregation.
–We are willing to consider a different name,
pastor, facilities, etc.
–We want to launch a radical new focus
rather than perpetuating who we have been.
Congregational Ministry
Choices
Plot a New Course
Relocate to a More Promising Location
–We want to relocate to a more promising
location nearer to our members and/or target
groups we are seeking to reach.
–We are willing for our current facilities to be
repurposed.
Congregational Ministry
Choices
Plot a New Course
Multicultural Congregation
–We desire to become a multicultural
congregation reaching significant numbers
of people from a diversity of racial, ethnic,
and national backgrounds.
Congregational Ministry
Choices
Plot a New Course
Congregational Multiplication Movement
–We want to plant new congregations.
–Our goal is to get to where we are starting
at least one new congregation each year.
–These will be among diverse target groups
of people.
Congregational Ministry
Choices
Plot a New Course
Multiple Site Congregation
–We want to worship in three or more
locations.
–Some locations may have live worship.
–Others may use a tape or remote feed of the
sermon.
