Food Price Monitoring and Analysis (FPMA)

In response to the soaring price event of 2007-08, the FAO GIEWS intensified monitoring of staple food prices around the globe, particularly in developing countries  Collation of available consumer prices for staple foods  Analysis of price trends  Dissemination of information and analysis for early warning and in support of timely adoption of policies to moderate price increases

Current data coverage (November 2014):

 In the successful global price tool a good potential was recognized to strengthen country level price monitoring and analysis

 The FAO-Turkey Partnership Programme (FTPP) provided the opportunity to develop and implement an adapted version of the Price Tool for country-level use in three CIS countries – Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan  The project is lead by the FAO FPMA  In Tajikistan the project has support from FAO EU-funded project “Support to Strengthening of the National Food Security Information System in Tajikistan”

Food Price Monitoring and Analysis Tool

 Inception mission identified the Agency on Statistics under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan (AoS) as suitable host for the Price Tool  National IT consultant recruited and trained in FAO Rome for preparation of data and installation of the Tool  Computer equipment for installation of the Tool has been procured for installation in AoS  Training of key specialists of the relevant structures in the use of the tool for markets analysis

In Conclusion . . .

 The Price Tool in Tajikistan will support AoS and all other relevant stakeholders to improve the quantity and quality of the market and food security information and analysis in the country and to enhance its relevance and utility and support evidence-based decision-making at all levels

What next?

 Finalize installation and historic data population of Price Tool version 1.1 (FAO/AoS)  Ensure regular data update procedure in place (AoS)  Ensure visibility of Price Tool via AoS website (AoS)  Use the tool to enhance national market and food security information and analysis (?)  Be prepared for future versions!
