Objectives

1.

Understand how Hershey’s Track & Field Games (HTFG) helps improve physical activity before, during and after school to support a comprehensive school physical activity program.

2. Acquire lesson plans and extension activities for classrooms, recess and afterschool programs to teach fundamental running, jumping and throwing skills.

3. Learn how to register and organize a local HTFG event.

You probably know that The Hershey Company has been making your favorite chocolate for more than 100 years, but did you know that for nearly a third of that time, Hershey has also been sponsoring the HERSHEY’S Track & Field Games?

Milton S. Hershey is known for one of the biggest philanthropic gestures of the century, creating a residential school for children in need. Hershey left his fortune to the School, which has been in existence for more than 100 years. Controlling interest of The Hershey Company is held by the Hershey Trust which funds the School.

Today, the Milton Hershey School, serves 1,800 children from across the country, providing a home, food, clothing, medical care, and a quality education at no cost.

Physical Education

Staff Involvement

Enlist the help of school staff members • Equip classroom teachers with Run, Jump & Throw classroom activity break ideas (erase their excuses!) • Encourage staff to participate!

• Staff can provide additional supervision and support during the HTFG event. 26

Family and Community Involvement

• HTFG active Birthday Party Kits as a resource for parents • Include families in HTFG meets as event volunteers (judges, scorers, supporters, drink station) • Work with the community recreation department to host HTFG together • Engage community service volunteers (Track clubs, Key Club, Kiwanis, etc) 27

Facilities

• Engage your creative skills! You can convert a grassy area on your school grounds or within your community into a “track” with some cones and spray paint. Ex: Handout on DVD • Some HTFG events (e.g., 50m dash, standing long jump) can be conducted indoors.

• Register as a Local Coordinator in the online event manager program and post your event information. Event Manager is filled with helpful information and materials to make hosting an event easy. 56

• To help new local organizers get started, HERSHEY’®S Track & Field Games provides all you need to run a successful event while supplies last. — softballs, measuring tapes, batons and stopwatches. Available

Recruit Volunteers

• The number of volunteers will depend on the size of your event. Designate a volunteer coordinator to maximize volunteer time and talents.

Successful Tips

1. Make it fun for the kids, volunteers, and you! 2.

Don’t wait until the last minute to round up volunteers. 3. Each participant must register by completing a Local Entry Form (available online). 4. Consider local donations/sponsors to provide ribbons, medals, or t-shirts. 5. Template certificates and flyers are available in online event manager tools. 6. Organize some family games for parents and siblings to Run, Jump & Throw during the event.
