Drug- Any substance (other than food)
that can change the structure or function
of the body or mind Example- cocaine
and heroin
Medicine- A drug that prevents , treats,
or cures illnesses, or eases its symptoms
Example- Tylenol, antibiotics
Reasons we use medications:
•Prevent Diseases
example- vaccines
•Fight Germs
example- antibiotics
•Relieve Pain
example- ibuprofen
•Treat other medical conditions
example- cold medication
Medicines that can be used safely
with a doctors written permission
Example- antibiotics
All drugs are tested for safety and
approved by the Food and Drug
Administration. The FDA also decides
which drugs are prescription and overthe-counter.
Preparations of dead or weak germs that are
most commonly injected into the body causing
it to make antibodies. Examples- polio,
measles, chicken pox

different body chemistry, body size, symptoms,
possible allergies, etc.

Mixing alcohol with tranquilizers
is a multiplier effect!
When 2 or more drugs are taken at
the same time. It can multiply
(greatly increase) the effects,
weaken the effects or cancel each
other out!
The physical and mental need for a drug
After football practice, Steve and his friend David
share some of David’s prescription anadol (type of
steroid pill) that David takes for his anemia.
Cathy is at a party and some of the kids are
sniffing Glade air freshener from a bag to get
high.
Jessica has a stomach ache so she takes some
Pepto Bismol. She doesn’t have a spoon, so she
drinks it right from the bottle.
Approximately one in five teenagers
has abused a prescription painkiller
to get high, and one in 11 has abused
OTC products, like cough medicine.
OTC drugs are

Check the seal before opening the drug
Check the expiration date and throw away all
medication that has expired.
