USING SKYPE 5.2 Conference Calls, Screen Sharing, File Sharing Connect session, April 11 Basics • Free download from http://www.skype.com/ • Skype-to-Skype calls are free • Includes International calls • Calls to non-Skype phones: 2.3 cents/minute • Video is free (disabled on conference calls) • Need a good internet connection • Paid subscription allows up to 5 people on a video conference call • $4.99 day pass, or $8.99/month • 7 day free trial available! Basics (con’t) • Conference calls are free: 25 person limit • Create a group, or add callers on the fly • Call originator needs good internet connection and a good computer • Don’t all need to be Skype phones • You’ll need Skype credit to do so • Credit card or Paypal • Use it or lose it after 180 days Basics (con’t) • Need a microphone at minimum • You should have a Logitech camera/microphone pod already • Contact Ruth Willson to get one • Headset gives better sound quality • Skype has Instant Messaging, file transfers, screen share too Setup • Download skypesetup.exe and double-click it • Create account: name, Skype name, password, email • Skype name: Extension convention is first.last followed by last 4 digits of your phone number • e.g. jeff.wood2262 • “Check your sound” button lets you test speaker, microphone, video • Good to do up front; Can be done at ay time Setting up Camera and Microphone • Tools>Options>General to set microphone, speaker, and video source • Audio settings • Set speakers and microphone settings • Video settings • Brings up your camera/mike settings dialogue box • Set video zoom, position, brightness • Take Skype snapshot here too - turn off camera now - Privacy settings • Tools>Options>Privacy>Advanced • Limiting everything to people on your contact list is best option • KNOW the people on your contact list Adding Contacts • Contacts>Add a contact • It’ll return all possible matches, so you may need to narrow it down • Name, Skype name, email, phone # • Skype sends a “Contact Request” • The contact needs to accept your request before you can call them Importing Extension Contacts • To import a contact list: • Contacts>Advanced>Restore Contacts from file • You can also back up your own contacts from this menu • Entire Extension contact list available at: • Faculty and Staff Resources>Computer Support Resources>Skype Contact list • It’s old, but a good starting point Calling • Select Contact • Click Call or Video Call buttons • Contact has option to answer with audio or audio/video • Click red phone icon to hang up Conference calls • On the fly: • “Add People” button in the upper right-hand corner • 24 maximum • Call Initiator needs a GOOD processor Conference calls (con’t) • Create group beforehand: • Contacts>Create New Group • Drag contacts into the blue box at top • Name the Group • It’ll show up in Contacts list at bottom • Call Initiator needs a GOOD processor Extras • Extras are third party add-ons for Skype • Tools>Extras>Get extras • Innerpass virtual meeting rooms • It’s clunky, hard to navigate, a huge resource hog • Free version only allows 3 people • Other extras: call recorders, avatars, social networking, games Instant Messaging • IM is useful, particularly when… • Someone is trying to configure their sound, or needs help with the call • Large group conference call • Click the balloon icon • Type your message and send File share, Screen share • File and screen share make Innerpass somewhat unnecessary • Share>Send File, browse to file • Share>Show entire screen
