Heaven and Hell

Christians believe that
Jesus’ resurrection on
Easter Sunday shows
he defeated death. If
they follow his
example, they too will
live on forever. This
idea is called
Salvation i.e. Jesus
saves us.

Judgement
The Day of Judgement

Revelation, the last
book of the Bible, says
that the end of the
world will follow the
battle of Armageddon.
God will judge the
living and the dead.
Some Christians have
their bodies buried
because they believe
that, like Jesus, they
will be resurrected
Jesus will judge people on the way they behave. In the Parable of the
Sheep and the Goats,
Jesus is clear about the appropriate behaviour:

"When the Son of Man comes in his
glory, and all the angels with him, he
will sit on his throne in heavenly glory.
This refers to the Second Coming
on the day of Judgement– the Son
of Man is Jesus Himself
"Then the King will say to those on his
right, 'Come, you who are blessed by
my Father; take your inheritance, the
kingdom prepared for you. For I was
hungry and you gave me something
to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me
something to drink, I was a stranger
and you invited me in, I needed
clothes and you clothed me, I was
sick and you looked after me, I was in
prison and you came to visit me.
The Son of Man sends the Sheep
people on his right to heaven, and
the Goat people on his left to hell.
Jesus gives a list of Charitable
Work that He expects people to
carry out if they are to enter
heaven. He also says that the
Goat-people go to hell for failing to
do that same work.
"He will reply, 'I tell you
the truth, whatever you
did not do for one of the
least of these, you did
not do for me.'
Jesus adds that any
act of Charity is not
only done for the
person who is being
helped. It is also done
for Jesus Himself.
"Then they will go away
to eternal punishment,
but the righteous to
eternal life."
The Sheep-people are
led away to
Heaven, and the Goatpeople to eternal
punishment.
Christians must follow the commandment “Love God and thy
neighbour as thyself” in what ever they do.

Heaven
Christians have
different views
about heaven.
Some say, “God
loves us so
everyone will go
to heaven”
Heaven

about heaven.
Others say, “only
Christians go to
heaven, because
everyone has
sinned.”

about heaven.
Others say,
“Good people will
go to heaven
when they have
paid for their
sins.”
The Bible is not clear what heaven is like.
 ‘My father’s house has many rooms I go
there to prepare a place for you’.
 Most Christians picture heaven as a
paradise where they will live with God for
eternity (forever).
 It is unclear whether a person goes
straight to heaven after death or has to
wait until the ‘Day of Judgement’.

Hell

v=XFGrQMD6Uqc
Hell is usually pictured as a
firery place where sinners are
punished for their earthly sins
for eternity (forever).
 Some people think that Hell is
based on Gehenna, a dump
outside Jerusalem used for
burning rubbish.
 Some Christians do not
believe that a loving, forgiving
God would create such a
terrible place of torture. Some
believe in annihilation, which
means you are completely
destroyed and cease to exist.

Hell
Purgatory

Roman Catholic Christians
believe that most people
are not good enough to
straight to heaven . Most
of us will go to kind of
half way house called
Purgatory where we will
be punished and cleansed
of our sins before
entering heaven.
You can speed up the time a person is in
purgatory by saying prayers for the dead
