3) Types of Paper
Consider the type of paper you are writing, as this will
have implications on both likelihood of acceptance and
the citation rate.
- Original Article
- Review Article
- Case Report
(Now less acceptable for publication unless they
are unique and report on an unexpected association
or outcome.)

4) Structure and Style
• ABC of Effective Writing
A – Accuracy
B – Brevity
C – Clarity
• Keep sentences short and simple (20 words)
• Be positive rather than negative
• Avoid needless words
• No Abbreviations
• Check references carefully
• Correctly label Figures
5) Tables, Illustrations and Photographs
• Should usually be submitted separately from text, and
legends typed on a separate sheet.
• Tables should be simple and not duplicate information
in the text.
• Data in graphs should be submitted in tabular form.
• Figures to be submitted as high resolution
TIF/EPS/JPEG files (>300dpi) as reproduction can
reduce quality.
• Ensure you have secured necessary permissions for
any third party material you have used, prior to
submission.
• Remember colour is not a substitute for careful thought
about data display!
6) How to Submit

• Remember submission of a paper is taken to denote

Paper submission channels and process

sometimes to journal office or society;
sometimes one copy
blinded.
• Covering letter requires you to state the
work is original in you (and that you have
authority to act on behalf of your coauthors if any) and is not being
submitted elsewhere.
• Review time: 1 week to 5 weeks

7) Rejections and Revisions
The usual reasons for rejection are:
– Insufficient originality
– Serious Scientific Flaws
– Absence of a message that is important to the
target audience
– Questionnaire surveys with low response rates
– Articles that are simply descriptive with little
attempt at evaluation
If you are sending a revised manuscript back to the
journal, you should include a detailed point-by-point
explanation of how you have addressed each
reviewers’ and editors’ comments.

upfront rejection- no literature awareness, messy structure,
no readability, no academic value
Dear XXXXXXX:
I am writing to you in regards to manuscript ******** entitled “xxxxxxxxxxx”.
As the EIC in charge, I have read your paper twice over the last two days. While I am
somewhat familiar with the area (especially the first three references, plus a bit of the fourth
one), I will admit that I could barely follow the flow of ideas in your paper. Unlike regular
submissions or other pearl submissions, your paper jumps right into the middle of a topic,
using difficult to understand notation, and giving only the barest of context. I expect that an
EIC with my background should be able to follow a paper in this area with much less effort…
Instead of assigning your paper to a Managing Editor, I am therefore taking the liberty to
reject your submission immediately. I urge you to read some of the recent theoretical
publications in Journal and to compare/contrast with your own submission.
