

INTRODUCTION:Congenital abnormalities of the kidneys and
urinary tract (CAKUT) are variable, occur in 1 of 500
newborns; predisposing to development of hypertension,
cardiovascular disease and end-stage renal failure. It
can affect the kidney(s) alone and/or the lower urinary
tract. Radiological investigation is essential for early
diagnosis.


MATERIALS AND METHODS:In our study, patients referred to Department of
Radio-Diagnosis, SRM MCH & RI from APRIL 2013 –
OCTOBER 2014 as suspected congenital abnormality of
the kidneys / urinary tract, were evaluated with various
imaging modalities. Patients were followed up for
maximum 6 months.


RESULTS
During this period, 15 cases of various Congenital abnormalities
of the kidney and/ or urinary tract were seen in our department. Out
of which there were cases of Horse-shoe kidney, cases of ectopic
kidney, one case of unilateral renal agenesis, Supernumerary kidney
case which is extremely rare, one case in congenital megaureter,
Duplex collecting system, Ectopic ureterocele with double moiety
ureter, cystocele and 2 cases of PUJ obstruction.
CONCLUSION:Congenital abnormalities of the kidneys and urinary tract are
common in children. They are a significant cause of morbidity in
infancy. Many morphological renal changes can be evaluated by
imaging studies. Imaging is essential in diagnosis of congenital
abnormalities, offering a better guidance in clinical and therapeutic
decision making process, additionally as a relevant tool for
identifying associated complications.
