WATER FACTS

Water covers 97% of the earths surface but only 0.6% fresh water is
available to use

We use 150 l/day of water each

Water freezes from the top down leaving fish unharmed.

It takes 1 tonne of water to grow a kg of wheat

It takes 20tonnes of water to produce 1 kg of coffee

By 2025 50% of the worlds population will suffer from water
shortage

You contain 55-70% water

A child dies every 15 seconds due to water borne diseases

We flush toilets with drinking water

We wash cars and equipment with drinking water

CLEAN WATER

Water is unique and life is not possible without it
Do you take it
for granted

Problems that occur with water

People have to drink polluted water-Illnesses

Pollution from Industry-illnesses, poisoning, no
fish

WATER PROBLEMS


Drought -Crop failure, Animals die,
starvation
Wars – If rivers are diverted, Dams are built,
High abstraction rates upstream, Boundaries
change.
When President Anwar Sadat signed the peace treaty with Israel in
1979, he said Egypt will never go to war again, except to protect its
water resources. King Hussein of Jordan has said he will never go to
war with Israel again except over water and a previous United Nation
Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali has warned bluntly that he
next war in the area will be over water

PROBLEMS THAT OCCUR WITHOUT WATER

. Ecological and social re-engineering. When
Rivers are diverted to grow crops upstream
Lakes Dry up

The Aral sea is only a ¼ of its size because
the Russians divert the river flow to irrigate
crops upstream, To grow cotton in a desert.
 75% of the population have left. The rest have
very little unsalted water

Huber are Filtration Engineers specialising in Liquid/Solid separation. We
make
 Screens and screening compactors to remove solids
 Grit traps and grit washers to remove sand and grit
 Fine screens for polishing effluents
 Sludge Thickeners
 Dryers for slurries
 Effluent Treatment plant
 Membrane filters
 Bio reactors
 Clarification equipment
 Sludge presses
 Sludge driers
 Special dirty water heat exchangers

INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS
• WATER COSTS ~£1/ m3 OR TON FROM THE
MAINS.
• IT COSTS ANYTHING FROM £.80 TO £20/ M3 TO
DISCHARGE TO DRAIN
• ANY REDUCTION IN WATER USE IS A SAVING
• ANY REDUCTION IN POLUTANTS IS A
REDUCTION IN COSTS.
• YOU MAY HAVE A PERMIT THAT RESTRICTS
YOUR DISCHARGE. FINES &LOSS OF GREEN
CREDENTIALS??
• YOU PAY FOR SLUDGE DISPOSAL INCLUDING
WATER
• YOU PAY ~£100 TONNE TO DISPOSE OF
MATERIAL TO LANDFILL
HUBER SE . www.huber.de
Effluent plant
Why pay for discharge of solids and BOD (biological
Oxygen Demand)
•
•
A screen can remove solids.
Removal of solids reduces BOD
•
Micro screens can remove even more solids
•
Dissolved Air Flotation can remove fine solids
HUBER SE . www.huber.de
Screens for solid removal
Reducing ongoing costs
•Cleaning when required reducing power
•Efficient slow rotation reducing power requirements and maintenance.
•Washing when required reducing water use
•Screenings washing to reduce odour note totally enclosed solids
removal.
•Compaction by the auger reducing screenings volume
•Stainless construction prolonging life and reducing maintenance
HUBER SE . www.huber.de
SLUDGE TREATMENT
WHY TRANSPORT WATER?
Sludge’s for treatment
Huber with chemistry and
mechanics thicken the slurry and
remove some water
By Thermally drying the
sludge is reduced to a pellet
and water evaporated away
HUBER SE . www.huber.de
SLUDGE PELLETS

Why not reduce the water volume and create something
useable

The sludge can be dried to a pellet which may be suitable
for fertiliser or fuel for a CHP plant (combined Heat and
Power)

RECYCLING CLEAN GRIT AND
SAVING LANDFILL
The Grit can be recycled
From road sweepings and Gully waste we can get clean
grit, bio-degradable material for composting and water
for treatment. Reducing landfill by 90%

THE FUTURE

As populations increase water will be scarcer

Carbon footprint will become more important

Energy recovery will be necessary

Phosphates and Nitrates recovery will be significant

P from P?

Energy from Waste

Water recycling blue to grey to black to irrigation and fertiliser

Food waste collection to get methane first then fertiliser

Heat from waste

Plastics recycling with less impurities

Grit recovery from road sweepings

Conversion of wastes to resource to improve the bottom
line and more importantly improve the environment
