Pop Warner Mission

The Pop Warner Mission:

The mission of Pop Warner Little Scholars is to enable young people to benefit from participation in team sports and activities in a safe and structured environment. Through this active participation, Pop Warner programs teach fundamental values, skills and knowledge that young people will use throughout their lives. Pop Warner seeks to provide fun athletic learning opportunities for children, while emphasizing the importance of academic success. Specifically, Pop Warner seeks to familiarize players and spirit participants with the fundamentals of football, cheerleading and dance. Pop Warner strives to inspire youth, regardless of race, creed or national origin, to practice the ideals of sportsmanship, scholarship and physical fitness as reflected in the life of the late Glenn Scobie “Pop” Warner.

Objectives

To encourage and increase youth participation in football, cheerleading and dance.

To ensure a safe and positive playing environment for all participants.

To instill life-long values of teamwork, dedication and a superior work ethic in the classroom and on the playing field.

Positive Experiences

Pop Warner programs have no tryouts or cutting of rosters.

Everyone participates under mandatory rules of play.

On-field coaching is allowed for younger age levels.

Individual awards are given only for academic excellence, not for on-field activities.

Safe Playing Environment

Players are matched by age and weight levels.

There are strict mandatory equipment requirements.

Pop Warner provides Coaching Clinics and Risk Management Training.

An enforced national rule book incorporates time-tested rules.

A full-time executive staff supports all local associations and assists in sound policy creation.

Why Join Pop Warner?

Experience & Stability

– Heading into our 85th season, Pop Warner is the oldest national youth football and cheerleading organization in the world. Founded in 1929 by Joe Tomlin in Philadelphia as four-team conference, we now have over 120 leagues and 400,000 documented participants.

Scholastic Emphasis

–Pop Warner is the only national youth sports organization in America that requires its participants to perform adequately in the classroom before permitting them to play. We believe that the standards we have set give these children a sense of responsibility and an appreciation for academics and athletics that will help them develop later on in life.

No Tryouts

– Pop Warner programs have no tryouts or cutting of rosters.

Safety

– Kids compete with kids of similar age and size. Pop Warner is the only youth football program that sets and enforces a strict Age and Weight Matrix that reduces the risk and reality of injuries.

Grants, Merchandise and Discounts –

Pop Warner sponsors and partners such as Schutt Sports and Team Cheer offer free equipment and merchandise as part of a grant program for new organizations as well as those in financial need. Other national partners offer Pop Warner only discounts and rebates on merchandise needed by local programs.

Annual Scholastic Banquet

– Pop Warner is the only national youth sports organization that rewards its members for their outstanding performance in the classroom by hosting an awards program each year to celebrate the accomplishments of our scholar athletes. Each year, the most academically accomplished Pop Warner kids compete for Academic All-American status, and are awarded scholarships on several different levels (National, Regional, League). Pop Warner has given away over

– Pop Warner offers low-cost, broad insurance coverage as a benefit to its members. The Plan is specifically written by Chartis to meet the needs of Pop Warner Little Scholars and is periodically reviewed to obtain the broadest possible coverage at the most competitive prices.

A child's age on July 31 is his/her age for the season. A player may gain 1 pound per week after the second game, up to a maximum of 9 pounds.

Live games shown on ESPN3.com throughout the week 57 th Super Bowl held at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex Dec 7-14, 2013.

PWLS CHEER & DANCE SQUADS

Cheerleading was officially recognized in the 1970's, but has been a part of the Pop Warner program for several decades.

Today, more than 100,000 children are participating in Pop Warner cheerleading and dance around the world.

Safety First!

safety initiatives include a PWLS Rule Book, Coaches’ Education Clinics and Online Coaches’ Training geared towards coaching youth participants.

Youth Divisions make it possible for all to participate according to Age Group and Skill Level, Novice, Intermediate and Advanced.

GAME DAY SPIRIT

The main role of Cheer and Dance participants is to support their designated football team, promote spirit at games and to encourage crowd involvement at events and in the community Practice begins on August 1 in preparation for their football season openers. Spirit squads are on the sidelines for a 7 to 9 football game schedule Championship playoffs .

Road to the National Championships

Spirit squads also compete in their PWLS respective League Cheer & Dance Championships @100 Events around the country throughout the month of October.

Once league champions have been decided, those advancing teams compete at respective November, country.

region eight championships locations across in the Those Region Champions, approximately 300 squads, will then be invited to ESPN Wide World of Sports™ to compete for a national championship in their division.

In 2013, the Pop Warner PW4 cheer division was broadcast live on ESPN3 for the first time with the goal of adding additional divisions in future years to the broadcast.
