Who uses the 10-Key?

Most of these people have learned to operate the ten-key without watching their hands or looking at the keyboard.

This tremendous little machine can also subtract, multiply, and divide automatically with the press of a key!

People who use TOUCH OPERATION on the ten-key are very fast and usually make fewer mistakes.

Remember

You will be FASTER if you DON’T LOOK.

The Basics. . .

Decimal Lever

Whenever you are working with dollars and cents or whenever you are working with a decimal point, you will need to adjust the DECIMAL LEVER on your ten-key. Most decimal levers allow you to set the machine for 1 or more decimal places. (This is how many numbers will print after the decimal point.) You need to set the decimal lever to “2 decimal places” so that your answers will be rounded to the nearest hundredth as shown below: 29.00 ÷ 7 = 4.15

The Keys. . .

A ten-key calculator has three rows of number keys.

A zero (0) key and function keys like add (+), subtract (-), multiply (x), and divide (÷). There are other keys to subtotal (+), to total (*), to clear ( C ), and clear entry (CE).

Home Row – 4, 5, & 6

• Position your right hand (even if you are left handed) over the keys.

• Place your second finger on the 5. Can you feel the raised bump. That dot is to help you know if your fingers are on the right keys.

• Place your first finger on the 4 key.

• Place your third finger on the 6 key.

• Place your little finger above the add (+) key.

• Your thumb will operate the zero (0) key.

• Press the Total Key (*) or (*T) with the finger closest to it.

• Not all calculators have the Total Key in the same place.

• Striking the Total Key before each problem clears (or cleans) the machine memory.

• Enter the numbers in the first line of the problem and press the Add Key (+). Continue entering numbers until you have the entire problem in the machine.

TOP ROW – 7 8 9

• Place your right hand in the HOME POSITION –first finger covering the 4 key, second finger covering the 5 key, and the third finger covering the 6 key. Be sure you feel the raised dot under your middle finger.

• • • With your right hand in home position, reach UP to the 7 key with your first finger. Keep your second and third fingers in the home positions. Strike the 7 key then move your first finger back to its home row position.

• Move your second finger from the 5 key UP to the 8 key then back to its home row position.

• Move your third finger from the 6 key UP to the 9 key then back to its home row position.

• If you make a mistake, zero out the problem by pressing the again. * key twice. Then begin the problem • Do not tear off your adding machine tape. At the store, the tape rolls up in the machine until the end of the day. You cannot tear it off. So do not tear it off here.

BOTTOM ROW – 1 2 3

• Place your right hand in HOME POSITION – first finger covering the 4 key, second finger covering the 5 key, and the third finger covering the 6 key. Be sure you feel the raised dot under your middle finger.

• With your right hand in home position, reach DOWN to the 1 key with your first finger. (Keep your second and third fingers in their home positions.)

• Move your second finger from the 5 key DOWN to the 2 key.

• Move your third finger from the 6 key DOWN to the 3 key.

0 AND REVIEW

• Place your right hand in HOME POSITION.

• Move your right thumb DOWN to the 0 (zero) and the 00 (double zero). The double zero is used when entering numbers such as 100.

Subtract

• The Subtraction Key (-) is usually located to the right of the 6 and the 9 keys. • You should press the Subtraction Key with the little finger on your right hand.

• Enter the TOP number and press the Add Key (+).

• Enter the BOTTOM number and press the MINUS KEY (-).

• In most calculators, this number will print out in red.

• Press the TOTAL KEY.

Multiplication

• The Multiplication Key (x) is located on the right side of the calculator.

To multiply on a ten-key, follow these steps:

• • • • Enter the top number (multiplicand).

Press the Multiplication Key (x).

Enter the bottom number (multiplier).

Press the Equals Key (=). (Use your right index finger to strike the = key.)

To number your problem:

• • • Enter the number of the problem you are working on.

Press the Non-add key (#) with your index finger.

The number and a non-add symbol will print on the left side of the tape, but the number will not be added into the machine memory.
