THROW-IN TYPES
Types of Throw-Ins

Designated Spots

Anywhere along the end line
Designated Spot

Used on every throw-in other than after a
made or awarded basket

Thrower shall not leave the designated spot
until ball is released

Opponents cannot be across the inbound lines
until ball is released
Designated Spot

Designated spot is 3 feet wide

No depth restrictions

Thrower must be completely behind the out of
bounds line
Designated Spot

Must keep a foot
over the spot until
the release

 Clarified that when the ball is awarded to
the wrong team on a throw-in...the mistake
must be rectified before the throw-in ends.
 This has been the interpretation and
stated clearly in the NFHS Basketball
Case Book for years – now just stated in
the Rules Book.

 Clarified that the ball is at the disposal
of a player when:
• It is available to him/her after a goal.
AND
• The official begins the throw-in count.

Throw-In Violations

Thrower shall not leave the designated spot
until release of the pass

Ball shall be passed directly into the court from
out of bounds so it touches by another player
(inbounds or out of bounds) on the court
before going out of bounds untouched
Throw-In Violations

The thrown ball shall not be touched by a
teammate of the thrower while the ball is on
the out of bounds side of the throw-in
boundary line plane (except 7-5-7)

Once the throw-in starts, the ball shall be
released on a pass directly into the court before
5 seconds have elapsed
Throw-In Violations

Thrower shall not carry the ball onto the court

The thrown ball shall not touch the thrower in
the court before it touches or is touched by
another player
Throw-In Violations

Thrown ball shall not enter the basket before it
touches or is touched by another player

Thrown ball shall not become lodged between
the backboard and ring or come to rest on the
flange before it touches or is touched by
another player
Throw-In Violations

Thrower shall not be replaced by teammate
after the ball is at the thrower’s disposal (except
7-5-7)

The opponents of the thrower shall not have
any part of his/her person through the inbounds
side of the throw-in boundary-line until the ball
is released on a throw-in pass

Thrower may penetrate the throw-in plane


A thrower can travel on a throw in

Team Control does not exist during a dead ball, throwin or a jump ball or when the ball is in flight during a try
or tap for goal

You cannot have a backcourt violation on a throw in
until player control has been established.

