2015 Women’s Season
Local Clinic #1
Points Of Emphasis for the 2015 Season
●
●
●
●
BENCH CONTROL!
Game Management
Perception
Knowledge of the Women’s Game
Bench Control
● An occasional reaction is normal human
emotion and often considered responsible
● Could even be loud and still be acceptable
● Distinguish anger at her/his players’ versus
anger directed at the Referee or AR
Bench Control
● Players feed off their coaches….especially in
the women’s game!
● It could be in a positive way towards the
player:
Coach: “Common Suzy it’s not your fault the ref
doesn’t know what he is doing”
Player: “You’re right Coach, he’s clueless”
Bench Control
● Players feed off their coaches….especially in
the women’s game!
● Unfortunately, it could be in a negative way
towards the player
Coach, “Suzy, what are you doing?”
Player commits a nasty foul out of frustration
Bench Control
Eliminate Irresponsible behavior
-Irresponsible behavior is any behavior
that is meant to:
◦ Erode the authority of the Referee
◦ Intimidate the Referee or ARs
◦ Influence the outcome of the game
Bench Control
Often involves “The Three Ps”
◦ PUBLIC
◦ PERSONAL
◦ PROVOCATIVE
◦ And sometimes PERSISTENT
Bench Control
What are some examples of IRRESPONSIBLE
BEHAVIOR?
Bench Control
●
●
●
●
●
Leaving the Technical Area
Entering the Field of Play
Physical gestures
Kicking/Throwing things
Talking to the Opponents or Opposing
Coach
Bench Control
● AR’s can play a big part in assisting with
Bench Control!
● They are techniques you can do to
DIFFUSE situations.
● There are many things you can say to
DIFFUSE situations.
● There are also many things you can say to
INFLAME the situation.
Bench Control-AR Techniques
● Use presence near the technical area
● Give equal time to both technical
areas/coaches
● Find the peacemaker on the bench to help
● Use a well-placed smile
Bench Control-AR Techniques
● Be a “sounding board” for the coach without
losing focus on the game
● Consider the “public, personal, and
provocative” and “persistent” guidelines
before asking the Referee to caution
Bench Control-Things you can say
●
“I hear you” or “I understand you, coach”
● “I will talk to the Referee”
● “We will talk about it at half time”
● “Talk to me rather than shouting”
● “Coach, I understand you are upset but you
need to calm down”
● “I can see you don’t agree with the call, but
PLEASE – settle down”
Bench Control-Things you can say
●
●
●
●
“The ref got it, give him a chance”
“Where are you going?”
“The ref was there” or “He’s very close to it”
“This is a game of angles; we have a
different angle than she does”
Bench Control-Things You CAN’T Say
● Curse, use abusive or insulting language:
● “Coach, shut up and sit down”
● Criticize the Referee: “I agree – he’s having
a bad day”
● Attack or criticize the coach or his team
Bench Control-Things You CAN’T Say
● Say what you would have done in that
situation
● Make physical contact with bench personnel
● Issue threats unless you are ready to act on
them (caution/disqualify/eject)
● Use phrases that invite further debate or
negative discussion
Game Management
Scenario #1: In a VERY close game this
happens
PK Given in last Minute
How would you handle (no pun intended)
this situation?
● If you were the Referee?
● If you were the Assistant Referee?
Game Management
● You need to smell a potential controversial
situation
● AR on the near side needs to tell the Coach
in PROFESSIONAL MANNER to stay in his
area.
● Slamming of the coat is an automatic
YELLOW
Game Management
Scenario #2: What would you do if you were
the Trail AR in this situation?
Handball?
Game Management
● You have no offside decision as the Trail AR
● Since there is a “dead ball” situation, you
have time.
● You probably will have a reaction from the
bench.
● Diffuse them first, then notify the referee
Game Management
Scenario #3: In a playoff game, a player sitting
on a yellow card with her team losing commits
this foul.
Team is losing 2-0 with 1 minute left in the game
Game Management
● At 2-0 with one minute left, the game is
OVER!
● Give the player a second caution and let
everyone know you mean business until the
last whistle!
● Imagine what the last minute will be like if
you don’t send the player!
Perception
● Best College Soccer Team Ever? Next
best?
● Best College Basketball Team Ever? Third
best
● Who will win the SWAC this year?
● Who will win the Big 8 3A conference?
● Who will win the Big East 3A conference
Perception
● There are some games which become
lopsided.
● Work hard the entire game regardless of the
score
● Reminder, what is the Mercy Rule for
NCHSAA High School Games?
Perception
Email from a coach:
Onto the issues with today's match regarding Head RefereeXXXX. A free kick
goal that decided the match and never crossed the goal line. The sideline
official who had a much clearer view of the shot told my keeper that the ball
never crossed, yet Mr. XXXX blew the whistle to signal a goal and when I
questioned his call, I was then carded.
In a close game, how can a referee make this call without the assistance of the
AR? THIS IS A GAME DECIDER! To card the coach makes the situation even
worse!
Knowledge of the WOMEN’S GAME
● Think back to last year’s clinic:
● How do fouls for the women differ from
men?
● When do men get their revenge on players?
When do women get their revenge on
players?
● How do the passing pattern of females differ
from males?
Knowledge of the WOMEN’S GAME
● Unless we recognize these nuances of the
game, we can lose match control which will
ultimately make for a poor experience for the
players, spectators, coaches, and officials
Summary
1. Bench Control-Don’t let Coaches elevate the
temperature of the game. It doesn’t have to be a
caution but it has to be dealt with!
2. Game Management-FEEL THE GAME! Manage the
reaction of the players. Understand WHY they feel the
way they do
3. Perception-Work Rate is high all year long! Regardless
of the score!
4. Knowledge of the Women’s Game-Know the Nuances!
