First Quarter TIP Project
TIP Information
Du e Date: October 6, 2014 Value: 15% of overall grade in each core subject class (Math, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, Reading).
Each section is worth 20 points!
Math
• • • Students are making conversions from the time period of the old colonies in the novel.
The teachers are providing the students with worksheet that includes the conversions and the problems.
Once you have converted all ingredients into measures, you will need to make enough porridge for more people. You must make the recipe 2.5 times greater, 6 times greater, and 3 /4 greater.
Language Arts
• • • • Choose one of the following characters from the story (Samuel Collier, Captain John Smith, or Pocahontas) As you read, analyze the character you have chosen and focus on their individual character traits. Complete Stickman Note making activity based on the character that you have chosen. On a separate chart, identify textual evidence that supports the characteristics you have chosen.
Create an “I Am” poem of at least 10 lines that describes your character. These characteristics will be taken directly from the Stickman Note making activity.
This poem will be presented in your Language Arts class.
Science
• • • Students will use information from the novel to plot, on a map, the initial ocean route of the Susan Constant, Discovery and Godspeed on their voyage from England to Jamestown. Using this information, research on types of ocean currents and other maps, students will explain why this particular route was taken. The science teacher will distribute a booklet that contains further instructions, the necessary maps, and space to write answers to 2 questions. On the back of the booklet, students will find a check-off list to help them complete the science part of the TIP.
Reading
• Students will research information about the way of life in the REAL Jamestown. Complete a T-chart comparing what you learned to the details in the book.
• Use the research to construct a model of the setting of the book and the REAL Jamestown. • Write a 1 page essay on the following topic. How historically accurate is the book? Use specific details from your book and your research to answer the question.
Social Studies
• • Timeline of Events: Create a timeline that documents the chronology, or list of events in the order in which they occurred. (Refer to the list of significant events from Blood on the River.) The timeline must include a title, and a
minimum of 8-10 dates with the related
event descriptions.

The map must be clearly marked and labeled using a minimum of 8 symbols and/or colors and there must be a Map Key that explains the symbols and colors. These symbols and colors must be used on the map to show the location of the following 8 places: Point Comfort Quiyoughcohanock Appamatuck Kiskiack Hog Island Mattaponi Paspahegh Pamunkey The map must also have a Title, Compass Rose showing the Cardinal and Intermediate Directions and a Scale Bar. (Refer to the Jamestown Map Activity.)
