What the heck is a STAD?
Student Teams-Achievement Division
Definition:v
COOPERATIVE LEARNING
STRATEGY WHERE STUDENTS WORK
TOGETHER TO LEARN AND ARE
RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR TEAMMATES
LEARNING AS WELL AS THEIR OWN AND
TAKE INDIVIDUAL QUIZZES TO TEST FOR
LEARNING
Yeah, so what does that mean?
Procedure:
1.

Teacher presents the material.
Students work in teams of 4-5 to prepare team
members for a quiz.
3. Students take quiz individually.
4. Students are assigned individual improvement
scores.
5. Teams are recognized for highest scores
Things to remember
Students work toward mastery of material
Can use whatever method works best will in teams
Cannot help one another out during quizzes
Score is based on previous score, higher individual
score=higher team score
Must test every week for it to work, looking for
improvements
Keep accurate records of scores, improvements, same, or
less than week before
Recognize team scores in form of a newsletter
…and a few other things
Students
like to contribute=work harder,
see improvements
See learning as social instead of isolated
Students begin help one another out
Great for academics, making connections
to others

TGT (Teams-Games-Tournament)
Definition-COOPERATIVE
LEARNING

LEARNING AS WELL AS THEIR OWN AND
COMPETE IN TOURNAMENTS AGAINST
OTHER TEAMS TO TEST FOR LEARNING
And the fun sounding one, how
does that work?
Procedure:
1. Teacher presents the material.
2. Students work in teams of 4-5
to prepare team
members for a quiz.
3. Tournaments are held usually at the end of the
week where content-relevant games are played at
a table (3 students) with one member from
different teams.
4. Teams are recognized for highest score each
week.
Things to Remember
Key* students compete against other
players who scored the same the week
before+keeps it fair and everybody can
contribute to team score
Ex.
high scorer vs. high scorer
Games are exciting and hook kids
Works especially well with less inclined students
Teams work together in six week blocks
Hey, they sound the same.
