Information, Advice and
Guidance:
The HEI’s Perspective
Kieron Broadhead
Head of Marketing, Outreach and Recruitment
Information…….
Advice & Guidance
• Lots of sources of information
• Institutional and independent – impartial?
• Online guides and websites galore e.g. Which?
• Who is providing the quality advice and guidance?
• Information has questionable value without reflection e.g.:
• Kings isn’t for someone in London who wants a small campus feel
• The best bursaries in the UK don’t make the HEI right for someone
The HEI Perspective:
• Some students are making the wrong choices
• Guides and information focus heavily on process
• Multiple sources of information lead to lack of trust
• Need to add quality interactions to the quantitative to IAG

MAJORITY OF PROVISION
The HEI Perspective:
• Too much time is being spent on UCAS process
• Not enough time is being spent on choices
• Too much time is being spent on finance
• Not enough time is being spent on transition and success
• Students are making ill informed choice
• BUT are writing fantastic personal statements
Questions that we’re struggling with:
• Whose job is IAG?
• When is the best IAG delivered and by whom?
• What bit of IAG is whose job?
• At what point does FE stop and HE take over?
• What happens if it goes wrong?
• How do we get people back a stage?
• What can we do together?
