• Learning Objective:
– Children to understand about potential fire
hazards in the Home.
– Children to understand how to keep safe and
prevent fire in the kitchen.
– Children to be able to identify basic fire
hazards in the kitchen.

• Success Criteria:
– Children will clearly be aware about what
potential fire hazards there are in the
kitchen.
– Children will be able to identify potential fire
hazards in the kitchen.
– Children will know how to keep safe and
prevent fire in the kitchen.

• Did you know that most fires occur due to
carelessness!
• Many fires could be avoided by keeping the
building free from fire hazards.
• Task:
– In pairs share your ideas of what you think
are hazards? (Write your ideas down so that
we can share them with the rest of the
class).

• In pairs look at the
picture.
– What hazards can
you see?
– What do you think
could happen?

• The most common cause
of fire is hot oil!
• Never leave cooking
unattended.
• If deep-frying food, dry
it before putting it in
the hot oil.
• Use a spark device to
light gas cookers.
• Don’t let pan handles
stick out.

• Keep electrical leads
away from the cooker.
• Keep flammable items
away from the cooker.
• Keep electrical leads
away from water.
• Keep the oven, toaster,
hob and grill free from
crumbs and fat.

• What to do if a pan
catches fire.
– Turn the heat off.
– Get out of room and
close the door.
– Stay out and call the
fire service
immediately.
– NEVER THROW
WATER OVER A
HOT PAN OF OIL!

• Independent Activity 1:
– Design a poster giving advice to pupils of a
similar age highlighting the fire hazards that
could be found in the kitchen.

– In pairs compile a set of instructions for
“childproofing your kitchen”.
– Choose the audience you are trying to attract
from:
• The Disabled.
• Childminders.
• New parents.
• The Elderly.
• A host family.
