This still life has been painted by a contemporary
artist in the medium of oil on canvas. The subject

the bottom part of the canvas. The objects vary in
scale, shape and materials. There are two plastic
containers, one inside the other, a cup, two bowls,

I would describe the overall colour of this painting
as being almost monochrome except for the tin and
produce
containers which have more intensity of

colour, especially the orange tin. An ochre,
nuetralised pale colour.has been used in the
background to make it recede.
The tin ,and produce containers have been painted
using secondary colours, orange ,green and purple
.
The orange tin is painted as a warm colour ,orange
,in contrast to the conatainers which are cool
colours ,and I think that the artist is trying to draw
your eye to this object ,and make it the focal point of
the painting.
I think this also because the title mentions the tin and
the produce containers ,and I think the artist is
wanting you to focus on these objects. Your eye is
drawn automatically to the orange container because
it is the warmest colour and I think the artist has
been quite successful employing this technique
The artist has used tone to good effect to emphasise
the shape of the objects especially where objects are
overlapping or sitting next to the wall creating
shadows.Although the objects have been placed
against the wall the strong light source and shadows
give the painting some depth.There are strong tonal
contrasts created by these shadows and there is a
strong light source coming from the right of the
picture which creates this effect.The light source also
emphasis the 3D form of the objects and makes them
look rounded.

Line and shape are also strong elements of this
painting. The various objects have been positioned
to
. overlap each other or placed so that interesting
spaces are left between objects eg either side of the
vase with the eggs. This creates a good balance
between positive and negative shape. The shapes
of the objects themselves are contrasting, and all
the white vessels are variations of spheres oval
shapes. The orange tin is also oval shaped while
the container looks out of place as it is rectangular.
In terms of composition,the objects are placed in
the lower third of the picture on a horizotal line
which cuts through them. The darkly toned area
under the work top contrasts with the light, white
surface and objects and gives the composition
stability.
In terms of picture space, the bottom half of the
composition is busy while the top half is
uncluttered providing a good overall balance.
The focal point,the orange tin, is positioned off
centre and this adds to the feeling of disharmony
that it produces in terms of colour.
Another pictorial element which I think the artist
may be trying to draw to the viewers attention is
the location of the white eggs in the white
vase.Tonally the eggs are in keeping with the
container that they sit in.

This makes me think that is painting is about
harmony and disharmony.
I also
. wonder why the artist is trying to draw us to
the brightly coloured tin, and why is it the only
vessel that is closed?What is in it?
Although this still life at first appears to be a straight
forward collection of objects, on further investigation
I think that the artist has thought carefully about
possibly telling a story or posing questions, and I
think it is a lot more thought provoking and
interesting because of this.
